German immigrant, conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, 1905-42.
Chicago Symphony Orchestra's second musical director (1905-1942); founder and conductor of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and Children's Concert Series; composer and an arranger of a variety of works, from popular classical pieces from established European composers to American folk-songs and works by contemporary composers.
Epithet: composer and conductor
American conductor of German birth and second conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO).
Born in 1872 in Julich, Germany, Stock began his career as a violinist in Cologne in 1891. Theodore Thomas persuaded him in 1895 to come to Chicago, where he played and conducted. When Thomas died in 1905, Stock embarked on a thirty-seven year tenure as CSO conductor. In Chicago he established an orchestra pension fund, instituted low-price and children's concerts, founded the Chicago Civic Orchestra, and introduced new compositions by Debussy, Ravel, Mahler, Schoenberg, and Hindemuth.

Title:
Correspondence from the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation Collection 1894-1953 (bulk 1920-1953)
Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge was a composer, pianist, and patron of music. In 1925, she created the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation at the Library of Congress in support of chamber music. The collection contains Coolidge's correspondence to and from many of the prominent musical artists of the first half of the twentieth century. Extensive correspondence between Coolidge and Library of Congress librarians and administrators is also included. The remaining materials in the collection, including photographs, scrapbooks, business papers, programs, publicity materials, iconography, realia, and clippings, are available for research and will be incorporated into the finding aid at a later date. Music manuscripts of works commissioned by Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge or the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation in the Library of Congress comprise a substantial portion of the collection and are cataloged individually.

Carpenter, John Alden, 1876-1951. John Alden Carpenter collection, 1891-1961 (bulk 1900-1949).
Title:
John Alden Carpenter collection, 1891-1961 (bulk 1900-1949).
The papers of the John Alden Carpenter Collection, which span the years 1891 to 1961, consist of music, correspondence, writings, photographs, scrapbooks, and other printed materials. The bulk of the collection is the music materials, primarily holograph manuscripts of Carpenter's songs, orchestral pieces, and dramatic works. The holograph manuscripts of the songs include not only his better-known works but also many that have never been published. Carpenter's chamber and orchestral works are well represented also. For many works that Carpenter later arranged or revised, the collection contains both the original and at least one revision. A number of the printed scores of Carpenter's music in the collection feature holograph annotations or alterations. The bulk of the correspondence in the collection consists of letters from Carpenter to Ellen Borden (Mrs. John Borden, also addressed as Mrs. Waller Borden), who became Carpenter's second wife in 1933. This correspondence dates from approximately 1910 to 1935, and although the letters are largely personal in nature, they do contain mention of various specific compositions and productions. The remaining correspondence is that written to Carpenter by various colleagues and friends, including George Whitefield Chadwick, Percy Grainger, Frederick Stock, Leopold Stokowski, and Walter Damrosch. There is also considerable correspondence from the 1940's between Carpenter and his publisher, G. Schirmer. Carpenter's writings in the collection consist primarily of his program notes for works such as Adventures in a perambulator, Skyscrapers, The eeven ages, and the song cycle Gitanjali, as well as the stage works Krazy Kat and The birthday of the infanta. Many of the typescript texts for songs and dramatic works include emendations in Carpenter's hand as well. Numerous photographs and watercolors of the sets and costumes of Carpenter's stage productions are included. The remainder of the collection consists of a variety of biographical materials, programs, and clippings. Three large scrapbooks include not only clippings and programs but also photographs from the stage productions and letters received by Carpenter.

Chadwick, G. W. (George Whitefield), 1854-1931. George Whitefield Chadwick collection, 1873-1936, (bulk 1885-1930).
Title:
George Whitefield Chadwick collection, 1873-1936, (bulk 1885-1930).
In the first series there is a smattering of professional correspondence from 1904, however the majority spans the years 1910-1931. The trove of over 1500 personal letters to/from Chadwick and/or Mrs. Chadwick includes substantial correspondence from Frederick Converse, Henry Higginson, Helen Hopekirk, Horatio Parker, Frederick Stock, Carl Stoeckel, Templeton Strong, and Theodore Thomas, as well as limited correspondence from Amy Beach, Walter Damrosch, Antonin Dvorak, Gabriel Faure, Arthur Foote, Isabella Stewart Gardner, Percy Grainger, Henry Hadley, Charles Loeffler, Edward MacDowell, Walter McEwen, Josef Rheinberger, Jean Sibelius, John Phillip Sousa, and Leopold Stokowski. The photograph series includes: a small number of Chadwick portraits; Chadwick family photos; several group photos taken at the Bohemian Grove (San Francisco) of Chadwick with colleagues including Clarence Eddy, William McCoy, Henry Hadley, and Joe Redding; staged performance photos from Bohemian Grove; and individual portraits of several other figures such as Frederick Converse, Henry Dunham, Wallace Goodrich, William McCoy, Karl Muck, Horatio Parker and Templeton Strong. Series five consists primarily of Chadwick's date-books from the years 1889-1931 and desk calendars from 1927-1931. Also included are several of Ida May Chadwick's travel diaries, an accounts ledger, and an address book. The sixth series contains over five hundred newspaper clippings, primarily reviews of Chadwick's music, dating from the late 1880s to 1931. Works of Chadwick discussed in these articles include: Antony and Cleopatra, Aphrodite, Cleopatra, Jubilee, Noel, Melpomene, Judith, The Lily Nymph, Phoenix Expirans, Sinfonietta, Symphony no. 3, Symphony in C, Suite Symphonique, String Quartet in E minor, Symphonic Sketches,Tabasco, and Tam O'Shanter. Chadwick's memoirs(diaries) and day-books make up series seven. There are eighteen volumes of memoirs - some bound, and some loose - some handwritten and some typewritten. They span the years of Chadwick's childhood (recollections and family history) through 1930.In addition there are sixteen bound daybooks spanning the years 1905-1930. While the earlier daybooks have little writing in them, the later volumes contain a good deal of writing, making them similar to the memoirs. The eighth series consists of programs, primarily of performances that included Chadwick's music both at and outside of NEC. The writings of Chadwick - speeches, tributes, reports, and articles make up series nine. The tenth series consists of three scrapbooks, presumably assembled by Chadwick himself. The first, consisting of approximately twenty-five pages, includes mainly newspaper clippings from the years 1884-1886, many of which discuss Chadwick's music. Towards the back of the scrapbook there are a number of pages that contain clippings of poetry. The second scrapbook, spanning the years 1873-1896, includes various programs, invitations, articles, and correspondence to Chadwick. The third volume in this series which dates from 1904-1906 is a combination scrapbook/memoir. It contains programs and clippings, many of which are accompanied by Chadwick's handwritten annotations. This volume also contains some daily journal entries, mainly from January-May 1906. Some items in the eleventh series, the miscellaneous material category, include: biographical information about Chadwick, contemporary information/criticism relating to specific Chadwick works, inventories of Chadwick's music and his music collection, and records of Chadwick's music royalties from several publishers. Series twelve, a small collection of artifacts, includes Chadwick's wallet and its contents, a medal awarded to Chadwick by the American Academy of the Arts and letters in 1909, and a silver bowl given to Chadwick in 1914 by the NEC faculty. The microfilm reels contain Chadwick's memoirs, diaries, and scrapbooks, along with some musical works (Te Deum in D major, Quartet no. 2, vocal score to act 1 of Pontius Pilate), and music sketchbooks from 1885, 1894, and 1897.

Carpenter, John Alden, 1876-1951. John Alden Carpenter collection, 1891-1961 (bulk 1900-1949).
Title:
John Alden Carpenter collection, 1891-1961 (bulk 1900-1949).
The collection contains music materials, correspondence, writings, photographs and artwork, biographical materials, certificates and honors, programs, clippings, and scrapbooks. The bulk of the collection is comprised of music materials, primarily holograph manuscripts of Carpenter's songs, chamber and orchestral pieces, and dramatic works. Many works contain both the original and at least one revision. A number of the printed scores of Carpenter's music feature holograph annotations or alterations. A large portion of the correspondence consists of letters from Carpenter to Ellen Borden who became Carpenter's second wife in 1933. Although the letters are largely personal in nature, they do occasionally mention various compositions and productions. The rest of the correspondence contains items written to Carpenter by various colleagues and friends, including George Whitefield Chadwick, Percy Grainger, Frederick Stock, Leopold Stokowski, and Walter Damrosch. There is also considerable correspondence between Carpenter and his publisher, G. Schirmer. The writings include Carpenter's program notes for various works, typescript texts for songs and dramatic works that include emendations in Carpenter's hand, and writings by others. In addition, there are photographs of Carpenter and photographs and watercolors of sets and costumes for Carpenter's stage productions. Three large scrapbooks include not only clippings and programs but also photographs from stage productions and letters received by Carpenter.
