Smith, Edward Parmelee, 1827-1876. Edward Parmalee Smith letters, 1873-1876.
Title:
Edward Parmalee Smith letters, 1873-1876.
Series of twelve letters concerning the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians of North Carolina. Six of the letters are from Edward P. Smith, Commissioner of Indian Affairs: one to James Taylor, delegate for the Eastern Band of Cherokees, and five to Columbus Delano, Secretary of the Interior. Two of the letters are from Columbus Delano to James Taylor. The last letter is signed by four representatives of the Eastern Band of Cherokees: John McCoy, David Tucker, Robert Tramper, and James Taylor, and is addressed to Zachariah Chandler, Secretary of the Interior after Delano and John P. Smith, who took over the office of Commissioner of Indian Affairs upon the death of Edward P. Smith in 1876. All of the letters concern claims the Eastern Band of Cherokees were making to the government relative to land and the appropriation of funds as stipulated in various treaties and acts of Congress. The main topic of concern in the letters of Edward P. Smith is the use of the funds appropriated by Congress for the Indians and how he feels they should only be used for educational and agricultural purposes. Interesting comments upon this topic and the governments obligations towards the Indians. Forms part of the J.B. Milam papers.

Carrington Family papers, 1749-1929
Title:
Carrington Family papers 1749-1929
The papers consist of correspondence, pamphlets, printed material, scrapbooks, sermons, and other papers relating to members of the Carrington family. Henry Beebee Carrington (1824-1912) and his grandfather, David Lewis Beebe (1763-1803), are two central figures in the papers. Henry Beebee Carrington material includes correspondence, a diary, a letterbook, maps, pamphlets, scrapbooks, and other items documenting his experiences as a student at Yale University, as a lawyer practicing in Ohio, and as a commanding officer for Union forces during the Civil War. Carrington's role in military campaigns and treaty negotiations with Indians of the American West is also documented. His design of Fort Philip Kearney, the site of a famous massacre, and treaty negotiations with the Flathead Indians of Montana are detailed in pamphlets, scrapbooks and other papers.
