George D. Hill was an Ann Arbor, Michigan businessman active in the period of the 1840s through the 1870s. Early in his administration, President Lincoln selected Hill to serve as surveyor general of the Dakota Territory. He was reappointed in 1865. In this position, Hill opened up the territory to immigration and land speculation. He resigned around 1868 and returned to Ann Arbor. In his later career, George D. Hill was responsible for the building of the George D. Hill Opera House on the corner of Main and Ann Streets. The Opera House opened in 1871.
