Realist painter Thomas Eakins was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1844. He was encouraged by his parents to develop his talent in art, and in 1862 he entered the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The 29th Indiana Infantry Regiment was organized in LaPorte, Indiana in 1861. It left the state in October of that year and moved south and saw action in Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia. Begole was born in N.Y. (State) on Jan. 20, 1815. He left for Mich. Territory at the age of 21, settling in what is now Flint (Mich.). In 1839 he married Harriet A. Miles and began work on a farm. After holding several local political positions, he served as County Treasurer, 1856-1864; State Senator, 1871-1872; a member of Congress, 1873-1875; and Governor of Mich., 1883-1885.
