The collection centers on the Southern black education efforts of James Hardy Dillard. Contents include correspondence (1905-1935) of Dillard, his diaries and journals (1919-1926), speeches and articles. There is considerable material regarding the Negro Rural School Fund, the Phelps-Stokes Fund, Washington, D.C. (also known as the Anna T. Jeanes Fund), the John F. Slater Fund, the Southern Education Board, and the General Education Board, as well as Dillard University, New Orleans, and William and Mary College, Williamsburg, where Dillard served as Rector (1917-1940). Other topics of interest are the Education Commission to East Africa (1923-1924), the University Commission on Southern Race Relations (1912-1927), and the Scottsboro case (1931-1933). The collection also contains personal and business papers of his second wife, Avarene Lippincott Budd Dillard, and their son, Hardy Cross Dillard. Published works by Dillard and genealogical information are also included. Gordon, Julian Green, Atcheson Hench, Charlotte Kohler, H. L. Mencken, John C. Metcalf, Dumas Malone, John L. Newcomb, Allen Tate, and Carl Van Doren. The collection also contains letters written by the ancestors of Wilson's wife Julia Tyler Wilson, and of her father Lyon Gardiner Tyler, president of the College of William and Mary. This collection contains the papers of two women, both of whom were named Martha Rivers Adams. Mrs. Adams, the mother (1882-1959) was editor of the women's page of the Lynchburg (Va.) News. The papers of and relating to Mrs. Adams include: 4 stories written by her; lists of Lynchburgers who served in World War I and of men registered with the Draft Board; letter from James Southall Wilson; copies of her newspaper column "Browsings"; and obituaries of Mrs. Adams. The papers of Miss Adams include her scrapbook from her senior year in high school (1925-1926). There are also two other scrapbooks in the collection, which probably belonged to Miss Adams, which contain mementos of various parties and plays in Lynchburg.

Albert Robbins stating that "Confessions of a victim" was not written by Edgar Allan Poe and a letter, 3 Dec 1962, to Arthur Kyle Davis from Christopher Short mentioning Short's novels "The big cat" and "Dark lantern." In a series of letters, 1929, Lewis Chase writes to Wilson re Thomas Holley Chivers. In a letter, 21 May 1920, A.G. Pollock writes to Wilson asking his support for the nomination of W. G. McAdoo at the Democratic Convention in San Francisco.
