This collection includes letters, account books, commonplace books, legal papers, etc., concerning Kane's career as a lawyer and politician. There is much professional correspondence, as well as a lot of family material, especially concerning his son, Elisha Kent Kane. The letters with George Mifflin Dallas and Francis R. Shunk are especially rich for Pennsylvania politics. There is also much concerning support for Alexander Dallas Bache's service in the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey.

This collection contains eight scrapbooks compiled by Henry Grinnell, made up almost entirely of newspaper clippings from New York and London papers. Also included are a few letters and pages from other publications. The scrapbooks mainly document the expedition of Sir John Franklin, the rescue missions to find him, and the Arctic region in general. Grinnell financed two rescue missions to find Franklin as well as other scientific missions to the Arctic region. The collection consists of eight scrapbooks complied by Henry Grinnell from 1849 to 1866. A box of undated clippings is also included in the collection. Almost all the clippings deal with the Arctic region in some way, including the rescue and scientific expeditions Grinnell financed; Sir John Franklin, his various crew members, and his final expedition; and the Arctic region in general. Henry Grinnell, who was born in Massachusetts in 1799, ran a mercantile company in New York City. After Grinnell retired in 1850, he financed several expeditions to the Arctic region. The first two were part of a search and rescue mission for Sir John Franklin and his crew, who went missing after they departed for the Arctic in 1845 with the ships HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. Franklin's goal was charting a Northwest Passage in the Arctic region of Canada. Grinnell financed the brigs Advance and Rescue for the rescue mission. Numerous attempts were made to find Franklin in the second half of the nineteenth century from both the U.S. and England. Grinnell's ships found evidence of Franklin's mission, but not the actual ships and were forced to return home. Grinnell later supported other scientific expeditions to the Arctic. Grinnell passed away in 1874.

Kane Family Papers, 1745-1955

A collection of letters, legal papers and financial records of three generations of the prominent Philadelphia family. Spanning 1745-1955, detailed are the legal cases and political advocacy work of John Kintzing Kane (1795-1858), Robert Patterson Kane (1827-1906), and Francis Fisher Kane (1866-1955). Also includes correspondence, architectural drawings, and photograph albums of the Cope family. Robert Patterson Kane's daughter Eliza Middleton Kane (1863-1952) married the Philadelphia architect Walter Cope (1860-1902) in 1893. The APS papers of Elisha Kent Kane are in call no. B K132.

The most stellar member of a stellar family, Elisha Kent Kane was among the most popular American explorers of the mid-nineteenth century, a hero in the tragic mode. Born in Philadelphia in 1820, the son of John Kintzing Kane and Jane Duval Leiper, Kane studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania before earning a commission as a naval surgeon. While in the Navy, Kane embarked on the succession of voyages to exotic locales that became the basis for his extraordinary fame. In 1843, he attended Caleb Cushing's first diplomatic mission to China as ship's physician, and subsequently traveled to the Philippines and Western Africa. Distinguishing himself in the Mexican War, Kane's greatest fame came from two expeditions to the arctic, aiming to locate the lost explorer, Sir John Franklin and to explore for evidence of the open polar sea. Kane died in 1857 while attempting to organize a third arctic voyage. Part of the Kane Family Collection, the Papers of Elisha Kent Kane contain a mix of personal and family correspondence with correspondence relating to all of Kane's explorations. Intelligent, articulate and very much a romantic, Kane's letters are expressive and passionate. The collection provides fine documentation of youth, his relationship with the Spiritualist Margaret Fox, and of course his travels to China and off the coast of Africa in 1846. Kane's two expeditions to the arctic are particularly well documented, with correspondence, notes, logbooks, diaries, and sketches, as well as Kane's post-expedition notes, writings, and lectures recounting his experiences.

The Foulke Papers are the product of the diverse social and intellectual interests of the Philadelphia attorney and philanthropist William Parker Foulke. A product of the distinctive culture of reform in antebellum Philadelphia, Foulke was the scion of the old elite who put a conservative stamp on social change. The collection onsists primarily of correspondence, notes, and essays. It includes numerous lectures delivered by Foulke along with material on the Lancaster County Prison, New York Prison Association, and the Philadelphia Society For Alleviating the Miseries of Public Prisons; notebooks concerning prisons and prisoners, including a 1846-1852 diary, and a listing of prisoners, their race, age, crime, sentence, and observations; a diary concerning the American Colonization Society (1852); a copy of an arctic diary (1853-1854) by John Wall Wilson, in the hand of Isaac Israel Hayes, which recounts much of the journey aboard the brig Advance, commanded by Elisha Kent Kane. There is also a list of buildings (1820-1841) designed by John Haviland, and material on the American Academy of Music, Philadelphia.

Grinnell accepting a dinner invitation, ledger (1860-1865) for the businesses of Grinnell & Tinker and Grinnell, Tinker & Morgan, brief history of the Grinnell desk, and his calling card; papers of Sophia Van Alen Grinnell, wife of Robert M. Grinnell, include correspondence with officials of the Metropolitan Museum of Art regarding gifts and loans and bills and receipts for cemetery plots and for work performed at the British Cemetery, Nice, France (1898-1899 and 1928); together with a deed for property sold to Lawrence Grinnell (1811-1893); letter discussing family history and the family coat of arms, and the marriage certificate for Pierre Clarke Severance and Isabel Morgan Rotch.
