Anatole France, 1844-1924, French writer and critic who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1921.
Anatole France (1844-1924) was a French novelist, essayist, poet, and critic who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1921.
Born François-Anatole Thibault in Paris on April 16, 1844, Anatole France was the son of Antoinette Galas and François-Noël Thibault, a bookseller and publisher. As a result of his father's profession, France grew up surrounded by books. He attended the Collège Saint-Stanislas from 1855 to 1862. He left the college in 1862 to begin studying independently and earned his baccalaureate degree in 1864. In 1877, France married Valérie Guérin de Sauville, with whom he had one daughter, Suzanne. The couple divorced in 1893. In 1920, France was remarried to Emma Laprevotte. France went on to have a prosperous literary career, winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1921. The prize was awarded "in recognition of his brilliant literary achievements, characterized as they are by a nobility of style, a profound human sympathy, grace, and a true Gallic temperament" (The Nobel Foundation, http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/literature/laureates/1921/index.html ). He died in October 1924.

Title:
Anna Strunsky Walling papers, 1880-1968 (inclusive).
The papers consist of correspondence, diaries, writings, memorabilia and photographs. The correspondence (1897-1964) which includes family, friends and political associates documents Walling's involvement in political causes. The letters also reveal Anna Walling's feelings on personal matters, social questions and her reactions to meetings with prominent persons both in the United States and abroad. Her trip to Russia (ca. 1905-1907) with William English Walling where they toured the provinces and met many literary and political figures is described in her letters home. Important personal correspondents are Melville Anderson, Gelette Burgess, Harry Cowell, Hutchins Hapgood, Ray Nash, Charles Edward Russell, Katherine Maryson, Jane Roulson, James Graham Phelps Stokes, Rose Pastor Stokes, Upton Sinclair and Gaylord Wilshire. There are also a number of letters from prominent political and literary figures of the period, among them Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, Zona Gale, Arnold Genthe, Jesse Jackson, Vida Scudder, Irving Stone, Henrietta Szold, Norman Thomas and Rabindranath Tagore. Despite her prolonged love affair with Jack London only a few copies of his letters are in the correspondence, (She gave many of his letters, manuscripts, etc. to the Huntington Library.). Also in the papers is correspondence of her husband, William English Walling, her sister, Rose Strunsky Lorwin, the Walling children, Leonard Abbott, her companion for twenty years, after the death of her husband, and the correspondence of Willoughby and Rosalind Walling, parents of William English Walling. Important among William English Walling's correspondents are Hutchins Hapgood, Selig Perlman, George Creel and Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Much of the family correspondence reveals the vicissitudes of a wealthy family trying to manage on a steadily diminishing income. Other difficulties in the Walling marriage are also frankly discussed. Anna Strunsky Walling's extensive diaries and idea books (1901-1964) span her adult life and chronicle not only events but also contain long passages of reflection and emotional expression on her marriage and children. Her writings in the papers contain articles, chapters from two novels (one unpublished), and two unpublished memoirs on Jack London. Also included are research files, a collection of postcards from her trips abroad and in the United States, family photographs and photographs documenting her trip to Russia, ca. 1905-1907.

Walton family papers, 1730-1980 and undated, bulk 1890-1975
Title:
Walton family papers, 1730-1980 and undated, bulk 1890-1975
The papers of the Walton family comprise journals and diaries; correspondence; writings; photographic materials; clippings; and printed material. Early items pertain to the Baker family of Hingham, Massachusetts, and letters document the Walton's courtship and early marriage. Papers from the 1920s to 1948 relate to Eleanore Walton's work with societies and clubs, and as a motion picture censor in Kansas City, Missouri. The larger Loring B. Walton Series documents Walton's student days, his service as a U.S. Army officer in the American Expeditionary Force in France and Germany, 1918-1919, and his lengthy correspondence with his mother, Eleanore, and with A. Goderic A. Hodges, a British Army officer. In addition there are a few letters from authors such as Wilmon Brewer, Count Sforza, Maurice Holleaux, and Anatole France, and a poem by Edmund Wilson. Walton's involvement with Duke University as a Romance Languages faculty member is also documented to a lesser degree. Photographs and negatives are of family member portraits, Princeton and Harvard campuses, 1920, Fort Douglas, Utah, also 1920, Hingham, Massachusetts, and unidentified subjects.

Harris, Frank, 1855-1931. Papers : of Frank Harris, 1893-1930.
Title:
Papers : of Frank Harris, 1893-1930.
The collection contains manuscripts of essays "Lovers of the truth: Anatole France," and "The dancing of Maud Allen." Correspondence describes his own work, especially the controversial "My life and loves," discusses the business details of writing, magazine editing and lecturing, expresses his concerns about censorship and the misinterpretation of his work, defends his frankness and pushes sales. He comments on the work of other writers, deriding the work of many contemporaries except James Joyce's "Ulysses." Harris describes Paris in 1914, predicts a German victory, and comments on his pro-German book. Letters to a soldier in post-war Germany elicit information on conditions there and despair over the future. His health, financial problems and a proposed edition of Shakespeare are also frequent topics. In addition the collection contains a photograph of Harris, prospectuses for the first two volumes of "My life and loves," a review of Huysman's "A rebours, " and notes for a lecture "Three modern figures, Nietzsche - Bernard Shaw - Walt Whitman."

The collection consists of two drafts of an unpublished manuscript of a speech on Eugène Carrière, addressed to Rodin, probably to be read by proxy on the occasion of the banquet in honor of Carrière in 1904. Anatole France praises Carrière's technique, his sensitive observation of life, and his ability to place art at the service of thought and emotion in a symbolist manner.

Anna Strunsky Walling papers, 1880-1968
Title:
Anna Strunsky Walling papers 1880-1968
Despite her prolonged love affair with Jack London only a few copies of his letters are in the correspondence, (She gave many of his letters, manuscripts, etc. to the Huntington Library.)

Walling, Anna Strunsky, 1879-1964. Anna Strunsky Walling papers, 1880-1968 (inclusive).

Artinian, Artine, 1907-2005. Artine Artinian Collection, 1785-1963.
Title:
Artine Artinian Collection, 1785-1963.
The Artine Artinian Collection of French literary manuscripts represents over thirty years of meticulous accumulation by the distinguished Maupassant scholar. The collection focuses on French writers of the latter half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with the largest segment devoted to Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893); however, both earlier and later materials are also present. Series I. Papers of Artine Artinian contains a single box of Artinian's own personal papers, which have been further subdivided into works and correspondence. The works are primarily composed of drafts for book reviews. Series II. French Literary Manuscripts Collected by Artine Artinian comprises the literary works and correspondence of writers collected by Professor Artinian. These are arranged alphabetically by author, and subdivided into works, correspondence and followed by miscellaneous materials, if any. The largest category is devoted to Maupassant, with much of the material the result of Artinian's survey of modern writers concerning the French author's legacy. Other writers represented in this collection include Honoré de Balzac, Gustave Flaubert, Anatole France, Marcel Proust, Rémy de Gourmont, Rachilde, George Sand, Paul Verlaine, and Émile Zola among others.

Bibesco, Marthe, 1886-1973. Princess Marthe Bibesco Papers 1768-1976 (bulk 1904-1973).
Title:
Princess Marthe Bibesco Papers 1768-1976 (bulk 1904-1973).
The Princess Marthe Bibesco Papers document her life, writings, and associations with notable European authors, artists, and heads of state. The bulk of the papers include correspondence, handwritten and typed manuscripts, galleys and page proofs, notes, photographs, and clippings. Series I. Correspondence comprises the bulk of the Bibesco collection. Among the Princess' correspondence are large groups of personal letters between Bibesco and her paramours Charles-Louis Beauvau-Craön, James Ramsay MacDonald, Lord Thomson of Cardington, with her cousins Antoine and Emmanuel Bibesco, her daughter, Princess Valentine Ghika-Comanesti, her husband, Prince Georges Bibesco, and with other friends and members of the Lahovary and Bibesco families. Authors she corresponded with include Paul Claudel, Jean Cocteau, Reynaldo Hahn, André Malraux, Paul Valéry, Max Jacob, Henri de Jouvenel, Enid Bagnold, Anna de Noailles, Anatole France, Sonia Cahen d'Anvers, Lady Maie Casey, Prince Felix Youssoupof, and Maurice Chevalier. Also present are business letters between the Princess and various agents and publishers such as Plon, Knopf, Bernard Grasset, and others. Bibesco also corresponded with a number of royals of the era, including Marie of Romania, and nuns, priests, and other Catholic figures, especially her confidant l'Abbé Arthur Mugnier. Series II. Works contains manuscripts, galleys, and research notes of her major works, including Catherine-Paris, Le perroquet vert, Katia, Au bal avec Marcel Proust, Échanges avec Paul Claudel, La vie d'une amitié, and La Nymphe Europe. Also covered here are various articles and essays Bibesco wrote for publication in periodicals such as the Saturday Evening Post, and unpublished materials. Series III. Personal Papers consists of items produced by or for Princess Bibesco but which are not categorized as works or correspondence. These items include drawings, financial records, legal papers, postcards, photographs, receipts, contracts, a registry of Romanian births, blueprints, and souvenirs of her trip to the United States. Series IV. is divided into three subseries: A. Correspondence, 1823-1974; B. Works by Others, 1877-1960; and C. Rapetti Collection, 1768-1866. Third-party correspondence in Subseries A. includes numerous letters between Valentine Ghika-Comanesti and others honoring the Princess after her death in 1973. Also included here are letters between members of the Lahovary family and correspondence to and from l'Abbé Arthur Mugnier. The subseries B. Works by Others contains manuscripts and galleys written by Bibesco's friends and family, including her father, Jean Lahovary, her uncle, Leon Lahovary, Christopher Birdwood Thompson (Lord Thomson of Cardington) and Charles-Louis Beauvau-Craön. It also contains a scrapbook with clippings of articles used for research or to document reviews of the Princess' various books. Subseries C., the Rapetti Collection of Historical Papers, consists of Napoleonic-era historical documents belonging to Count Pierre-Nicolas Rapetti, Secretary of the Commission Charged with the Publication of the Letters of Napoleon I. These papers were inherited by Princess Bibesco from her mother-in-law, the Princess Valentine de Caraman Chimay The Rapetti Collection contains hundreds of certified copies of documents in the French National Archives (Le centre historique des Archives nationales). The existence of the originals is now in some doubt, since they were removed from Paris during the German occupation and are believed to have been destroyed.
