Educated at City of London School. After a few years of business he decided to devote himself to astronomy. F. R. A. S. 1854. In 1856 he built an observatory at Tulse Hill and applied to stars the methods of Kirchhofs researches into the chemical constitution of the sun. In conjunction with William Allen Miller (F. R. S. 1845) he devised the star spectroscope and showed that in structure the stars resemble the sun. F. R. S. 1865. Royal Medal 1866. Rumford Medal 1880. Copley Medal 1898. President of British Association 1891. K. C. B. 1897. O. M. 1902. He was elected 37th President of the Royal Society 1900-1905. In 1890 he received a civil list pension.
Astronomer. Fellow of the Royal Society.
Pioneer in field of astrophysics and spectroscopic astronomy. Huggins designed a spectrascope to observe stellar spectra. His work also includes spectroscopic observations of nebula, comets and a nova.

Todd, David P. (David Peck), 1855-1939. David Peck Todd papers, 1862-1939 (inclusive).
Title:
David Peck Todd papers, 1862-1939 (inclusive).
Correspondence, writings, records of astronomical expeditions, diaries, notebooks and scrapbooks of David Peck Todd, astronomer and teacher at Amherst College from 1881 to 1917. Between 1882 and 1914 Todd conducted nine expeditions to various parts of the world to study solar eclipses. The notes, photographs, drawings and memorabilia of these expeditions make up a significant portion of the papers. He was also a fertile inventor, and plans and drawings for many devices, some related to solving technical problems encountered on his expeditions are included in the papers. As an early enthusiast of aviation, he made a balloon ascent in 1910 and advocated aerial photography for recording eclipses. In Amherst he raised funds to build a new observatory in 1905 and records of this project and of his teaching career are very well documented. Her letters to her husband during her lecture tours provide an insight both into her character and into female social life of the period. The 368 letters that she wrote between 1878 and 1922 are in themselves a significant section of the papers. Todd's correspondents include astronomers and scientists from all over the world as well as public figures in the United States. In 1922 he was declared incompetent and spent his remaining years in institutions. His writings include three textbooks on astronomy and a wide range of scientific and popular articles, copies of which are in the papers. His wife, Mabel Loomis Todd, who was the first to transcribe and publish Emily Dickinson's poems, was an active social force in Amherst andtheir family correspondence offers a vivid picture of the life of the town as well as a remarkably frank picture of their personal relationship. Lick Observatory. Records, 1873-1966.
Title:
Records, 1873-1966.
Early letters and diaries record the founding, building and equipping of the observatory. In 1876 Captain Floyd, President of the Lick Trust, spent a year in Europe visiting observatories, instrument makers, and astronomers. It was a critical time in the development of the reflecting telescope and the letters of David Gill, Howard Grubb, and William Huggins present the way of thinking of that perod. The correspondence of C. Feil, Alvan Clark, John Brashear, Ambrose Swasey, Simon Newcomb and others documents in detail the planning and construction of the 36-inch refractor. Includes the diary of Thomas E. Fraser (superintendent of construction) written while the Observatory was being built, and correspondence between Lewis Boss, George E. Hale, and W.W. Campbell (members of the Committee on Southern and Solar Observatories of the Carnegie Institution of Washington) and William J. Hussey, relating to their report of 1903. Includes correspondence of early directors of the observatory, E.S. Holden (Director, 1888-1897, 60 vols.); J.M. Schaeberle (Act. Director, 1897-1898, 3 vols.); J.E. Keeler (Director, 1898-1900, 6 vols.); W.W. Campbell, Director, 1900-1904). Also included in the early staff were Richard Tucker, Edward Barnard, and S.W. Burnham. Their letters record the pioneer work of the observatory, such as a meridian circle program, radial velocity work, and nebular photography. Tucker's letters also give. Interesting accounts of his nine years at the Argentine National Observatory at Cordoba and three years in charge of the Southern Station of the Carnegie Institution at San Luis. Continuing material includes correspondence of Directors Robert G. Aitken (1930-1935), William H. Wright (1935-1942), Joseph H. Moore (1942-1945), C. Donald Shane (1945-1958), and Albert E. Whitford (1958-1968).

In Amherst he raised funds to build a new observatory in 1905 and records of this project and of his teaching career at Amherst are very well documented. His writings include three textbooks on astronomy and a wide range of scientific and popular articles, copies of which are in the papers. His wife, Mabel Loomis Toddd, who was the first to transcribe and publish Emily Dickinson's poems, was an active social force in Amherst and their family correspondence offers a vivid picture of the life of the town as well as a remarkably frank picture of their personal relationship. She also lectured extensively, basing her talks on observations made during the eclipse expeditions.
