Composed 1915. First performance Boston, 2 March 1917, Boston Symphony, Carl Muck conductor. Dedicated to Mr. & Mrs. Carl Stoeckel.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
Charles Martin Loeffler was born on January 30, 1861. His place of birth is disputed; he claimed to be Alsatian, but according to his biographer Ellen Knight, documents indicate that he was actually born near Berlin. He studied violin and composition in Germany (where Joseph Joachim was one of his teachers) and France, and in 1881 he went to the United States, which eventually became his permanent home. From 1882 to 1903 Loeffler was Second Concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and he achieved considerable renown as a solo violinist. He composed extensively, and his works were widely performed during his lifetime. He received many awards, including an honorary doctorate from Yale University in 1926. Charles Martin Loeffler died on May 19, 1935.
First performance Boston, 4 January 1895. Dedicated to Mme. Gardner (Mrs. John Gardner of Boston). Third movement dedicated to the memory of Franz Liszt.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
Alsatian-born composer.
American composer of French birth.
Charles [Karl] Martin Loeffler, violinist and composer, was born on Jan. 30, 1861 in Schöneberg, nr Berlin, or Mulhouse, Alsace. He had his first violin lessons in the late 1860s from a German member of the Russian Imperial Orchestra. By the age of 13 he had decided to become a professional violinist, and from 1874 to 1877 studied violin with Joachim and Eduard Rappoldi and theory with Friedrich Kiel and Bargiel at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin. He continued his musical studies in Paris, taking private lessons in violin from Massart and in composition from Guiraud. He was a member of Pasdeloup's orchestra for a season, then played in the private orchestra of Paul de Derwies (1879-1881). After the death of Derwies in June 1881, Loeffler left for the USA. He became an American citizen in 1887. In the autumn of 1882 Loeffler joined the Boston SO as second concertmaster, a position he held for 21 years. He became a favourite soloist with the Boston public. Loeffler retired from the orchestra at the end of the 1902-1903 season. After spending a year (1904-1905) in Paris he settled in Medfield, Massachusetts, where he shared his time between his working farm, his thoroughbred horses, and his musical activities. He died on May 19, 1935 in Medfield.
Based on Nikolai Gogol's "Evenings on a farm near Dikanka." Some motifs in movement 3 are authentic Russian folk melodies. First performance Boston, 20 November 1891, Boston Symphony Orchestra. Dedicated to Henry L. Higginson.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.

Chadwick, G. W. (George Whitefield), 1854-1931. George Whitefield Chadwick collection, 1873-1936, (bulk 1885-1930).
Title:
George Whitefield Chadwick collection, 1873-1936, (bulk 1885-1930).
In the first series there is a smattering of professional correspondence from 1904, however the majority spans the years 1910-1931. The trove of over 1500 personal letters to/from Chadwick and/or Mrs. Chadwick includes substantial correspondence from Frederick Converse, Henry Higginson, Helen Hopekirk, Horatio Parker, Frederick Stock, Carl Stoeckel, Templeton Strong, and Theodore Thomas, as well as limited correspondence from Amy Beach, Walter Damrosch, Antonin Dvorak, Gabriel Faure, Arthur Foote, Isabella Stewart Gardner, Percy Grainger, Henry Hadley, Charles Loeffler, Edward MacDowell, Walter McEwen, Josef Rheinberger, Jean Sibelius, John Phillip Sousa, and Leopold Stokowski. The photograph series includes: a small number of Chadwick portraits; Chadwick family photos; several group photos taken at the Bohemian Grove (San Francisco) of Chadwick with colleagues including Clarence Eddy, William McCoy, Henry Hadley, and Joe Redding; staged performance photos from Bohemian Grove; and individual portraits of several other figures such as Frederick Converse, Henry Dunham, Wallace Goodrich, William McCoy, Karl Muck, Horatio Parker and Templeton Strong. Series five consists primarily of Chadwick's date-books from the years 1889-1931 and desk calendars from 1927-1931. Also included are several of Ida May Chadwick's travel diaries, an accounts ledger, and an address book. The sixth series contains over five hundred newspaper clippings, primarily reviews of Chadwick's music, dating from the late 1880s to 1931. Works of Chadwick discussed in these articles include: Antony and Cleopatra, Aphrodite, Cleopatra, Jubilee, Noel, Melpomene, Judith, The Lily Nymph, Phoenix Expirans, Sinfonietta, Symphony no. 3, Symphony in C, Suite Symphonique, String Quartet in E minor, Symphonic Sketches,Tabasco, and Tam O'Shanter. Chadwick's memoirs(diaries) and day-books make up series seven. There are eighteen volumes of memoirs - some bound, and some loose - some handwritten and some typewritten. They span the years of Chadwick's childhood (recollections and family history) through 1930.In addition there are sixteen bound daybooks spanning the years 1905-1930. While the earlier daybooks have little writing in them, the later volumes contain a good deal of writing, making them similar to the memoirs. The eighth series consists of programs, primarily of performances that included Chadwick's music both at and outside of NEC. The writings of Chadwick - speeches, tributes, reports, and articles make up series nine. The tenth series consists of three scrapbooks, presumably assembled by Chadwick himself. The first, consisting of approximately twenty-five pages, includes mainly newspaper clippings from the years 1884-1886, many of which discuss Chadwick's music. Towards the back of the scrapbook there are a number of pages that contain clippings of poetry. The second scrapbook, spanning the years 1873-1896, includes various programs, invitations, articles, and correspondence to Chadwick. The third volume in this series which dates from 1904-1906 is a combination scrapbook/memoir. It contains programs and clippings, many of which are accompanied by Chadwick's handwritten annotations. This volume also contains some daily journal entries, mainly from January-May 1906. Some items in the eleventh series, the miscellaneous material category, include: biographical information about Chadwick, contemporary information/criticism relating to specific Chadwick works, inventories of Chadwick's music and his music collection, and records of Chadwick's music royalties from several publishers. Series twelve, a small collection of artifacts, includes Chadwick's wallet and its contents, a medal awarded to Chadwick by the American Academy of the Arts and letters in 1909, and a silver bowl given to Chadwick in 1914 by the NEC faculty. The microfilm reels contain Chadwick's memoirs, diaries, and scrapbooks, along with some musical works (Te Deum in D major, Quartet no. 2, vocal score to act 1 of Pontius Pilate), and music sketchbooks from 1885, 1894, and 1897.

Title:
Serge Koussevitzky Archive 1920-1976 (bulk 1924-1951)
The archive is a collection of correspondence, personal and business papers, photographs, and other materials which document some of the most significant aspects of twentieth-century music. Through his work as a conductor and publisher, and his efforts to commission new musical works, Koussevitzky maintained deep ties with many of the finest composers and musicians of the day. These figures are represented in their personal and professional affiliations with the conductor. In addition to serving as a record of Koussevitzky's life and career, the collection extensively chronicles periods in the history of organizations such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center, the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, and the American International Music Fund. Material in the collection dates from Koussevitzky's years in his native Russia. The bulk of the collection dates from 1924 to 1951; it also contains material created after Koussevitzky's death, reflecting his widow's continuing work with various organizations and projects. Musical compositions commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky are part of the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation Collection, and are shelved in ML30.3c, ML30.3c2, ML30.3c3, and ML30.3e2.

Betti, Adolfo, 1875-1950. Adolfo Betti Papers, 1907-1940.
Title:
Adolfo Betti Papers, 1907-1940.
The Betti papers consist primarily of typed and autograph manuscripts, incoming correspondence, financial records, newspaper clippings, concert programs, and publicity photographs. The materials mainly relate to his activities with the Flonzaley Quartet but also, to a lesser extent, to his teaching and editing. The papers span the years 1907 through 1940, and items have been grouped by form of material. The clippings consist of concert reviews from American and European newspapers between 1907 and 1910, with another group dating from 1920. One of the most interesting portions of the archive, these give a detailed composite picture of the quartet's sound, style, and working methods as well as their reception in Europe and in different regions of the U. S. There is a folder of materials on Betti's wife, the French cellist Madeleine Monnier, consisting of concert programs, correspondence and contracts relating to her recitals for various clubs, and publicity flyers. Among the music manuscripts are holograph parts, in the hands of Betti and other members of the quartet, for Stravinsky's Concertino for string quartet (1920), which was commissioned and premiered by the Flonzaley. These parts have performance annotations. Also present are the holograph score and parts for Betti's arrangement of Geminiani's Concerto in sol minore, op. 3, no. 2, and two of his cadenzas for Viotti's 22nd concerto. There are also holograph scores for violin and piano, cello and piano, and string quartet by various composers. Dates of composition range from 1894 to 1955.
