William Cobbett, British journalist and reformer. In March 1792, he traveled to France but the French Revolution made him sail to the United States in September. He settled in Wilmington, Del. where he taught English to French immigrants. In 1794, he moved to Philadelphia, and in 1800 returned to England.
William Cobbett, English political writer and farmer. In the 1790's, Cobbett wrote many anti-Jacobin pamphlets and journal articles under the pseudonym Peter Porcupine. In 1801 he began the Political Register, a journal that was continuously published until his death, and which traced the trajectory of his politics toward the radical. Threatened with arrest for sedition, Cobbett took refuge in the United States from 1817 to 1819. His years of advocacy for English farmers helped him secure a short but successful career in Parliament during the last years of his life.
English essayist, politician, and agriculturist, elected Member of Parliament in 1832, who issued Cobbett's Weekly Political Register from 1802-1835.

Revolutionary War pamphleteer.
English political journalist and essayist.
English essayist and politician.
British essayist, politician and agriculturist.
Philadelphia journalist, wrote under the name Peter Porcupine.
English author.
British writer who lived in the United States from 1792-1800 where he pursued an interest in journalism.
William Cobbett was a polemical writer, publisher, and activist. Born in England, he worked odd jobs and served an unsatisfying stint in the army, stationed in Canada, before traveling to the United States. While there, he wrote and published in Philadelphia, where he promoted friendship between England and America while warning against France. He returned to England in 1800, where he continued writing and publishing his views about social and political issues. Blunt, outspoken, and remarkably prolific, Cobbett was an important force in social reform and political activism, although his views were often controversial.
William Cobbett (1763-1835) was an English journalist and publicist. His pseudonym was Peter Porcupine. In 1792-1800 and again in 1817-1819, Cobbett was a political refugee in the United States. While a refugee, in 1796, he opened a bookshop in Philadelphia. It is for this bookshop that this ledger was kept until 1800.
Political writer and agitator.
British political journalist.
Cobbett resided in America during the years 1792-1800 and 1817-1819, where he pursued his political pamphleteering and journalism.
William Cobbett emigrated to Philadelphia in 1792. He taught English to French refugees. He became very active in bookselling and publishing and eventually, as a pamphleteer, became a factor in American politics. In 1796, he began "The Censor," a monthly publication; it was replaced in 1797 by "Porcupine's Gazette," which ran until 1799. He was a Royalist who sided with the Federalist in American politics.
In 1797 he was sued for libel by Dr. Benjamin Rush. Cobbett took issue with Rush's treatment of Yellow Fever by bleeding. Cobbett contended that the bleeding caused more deaths of those stricken by the epidemic than cured. Rush won the lawsuit and was awarded $5,000.
Cobbett removed to England in 1800, where he renewed his bookselling and publishing interests and became quite active in English politics.

Title:
George Henry Glasse correspondence, 1757-1808 (inclusive), 1778-1808 (bulk).
The great majority of these letters are addressed to George Henry Glasse, with most of the remainder addressed to his father Samuel Glasse. The earlier letters, mostly from 1778 to 1788 in volumes 1 and 8, are largely concerned with Oxford matters, Glasse's literary interests, and his establishment at Hanwell. The bulk of the letters from 1802 onward reflect Glasse's increased preoccupation with social status as a domestic chaplain to the nobility, and concern social invitations, financial negotiations, and patronage positions. Events in Glasse's life which attract extensive attention in these letters are: his publication of a Greek translation of William Mason's Caractacus in 1781; his failed courtships of Elizabeth de Blaquiere in 1803 and Anastasia Jessey Gascoigne in 1804; and the christening of his youngest son Frederick in 1806. Several letters mention Samuel Johnson and Hester Lynch Piozzi. Glasse corresponded regularly with members of the British and French royal families, especially George Augustus Frederick, Prince of Wales (later King George IV); Adolphus Frederick, Duke of Cambridge; Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent; Louis Philippe, duc d'Orléans (later King of the French); and Louis Joseph de Bourbon, prince de Condé. Other notable correspondents include: Charles Thomas Barker (an Oxford classmate of Glasse's); William Cobbett; Glasse's father Dr. Samuel Glasse; George Horne; Sir John McMahon; Irish poet Thomas Moore; Samuel Parr; and Julie de St. Laurent.

· Bound manuscript essay, "To John Cartwright Esq. : Letter X on the conduct of the Westminster Rump and on that of Mr. Hunt and on Sir Francis Burdett" : 42 p. : 5 Sep 1818 : (MISC 4022) : essay for Cobbett's Weekly Political Register, in the form of an open letter to Cobbett's friend and ally John Cartwright. Cobbett satirizes the "Westminster Rump" (the reform-resistant faction of the Westminster electorate), and expresses his support for the election to Parliament of his close associate Henry Hunt over the candidate backed by the increasingly conservative Francis Burdett. The first 34 pages are in the hand of an amanuensis, the rest in Cobbett's hand. Provenance : Robert Earl of Crewe (armorial bookplate). Shelved under "Cobbett" with bound manuscript volumes. · To Montagu Burgoyne, politician : 1 autograph letter signed : 24 Feb 1807 : (MISC 3602b) : about an invitation, and his anxious desire "to possess an Essex dog." · To a John Clewer : 1 autograph letter signed : 30 Jun [1806?] : (MISC 3604) : prompting him to accept a copy of "The Population Returns for the whole kingdom of England and Wales." · To a Mr. Cook : 1 autograph letter signed : 6 May 1830 : (MISC 3606) : introducing Mr. Dean as his agent, presumably refering to Cobbett's campaign in favor of reform. · To J. Frank Whitson Fetter Papers, 1902-1992
Title:
Frank Whitson Fetter Papers, 1902-1992
American economist on the faculty of Northwestern University, and economic advisor to international banks and governments. The papers of Frank Whitson Fetter span the years 1902-1992, with the bulk dating from the 1920s through 1980. Included are correspondence, diaries and journals, teaching materials, published books, articles and book reviews, and all the supporting research for these publications. There is also printed material, as well as additional research materials on index cards and microfilm. The files also contain fellowship and grant applications, conference and seminar programs, notes and texts of lectures and speeches, as well as financial papers, a scrapbook and photographs. The collection highlights the academic and consulting experiences (particularly the Kemmerer Commission) of a twentieth-century American economist, and documents his intellectual development as an historian of economic thought, as well as his many years of consulting and government service regarding international monetary issues. Centering on Fetter's publications and research, and to a lesser extent his teaching, the largest series in the collection are the Publications Series and the General Research Series. His publications and research focused on the study of the history of economics, British banking and monetary policy, inflation, and international economic thought. As reflected in the Correspondence Series, he corresponded with economists, academics, and writers. The Commissions, Consulting and Government Services Series includes the materials used to produce various economic reports for the foreign governments of Guatemala, Ecuador, Chile, Bolivia, Poland, and China. Other files contain Fetter's personal diaries, detailing how he spent his time while commissioned abroad, as well as an oral history about his international work. There is a relatively small amount of material concerning Fetter's personal life.

Title:
ALS to William Gifford (1756-1826), Bustleton [Philadelphia], 1799 Jun 28.
Manuscript, in a single hand, of a letter written in America which describes Cobbett's views on France, Great Britain, and the United States. He writes of the "horrid catalogue of republican crimes" in France and declares that "it appears to me, that the Almighty has resolved, not only to preserve Great Britain, but to set her on high as his chosen nation." He also writes of "the folly, the baseness, of this government and people" of the United States, adding that "they would sooner see the country subjugated by France, than do any act that might, either directly or indirectly, tend to the safety and glory of Great Britain," and worries about the effects of British merchants trading with American goods. The letter also includes details of the book on which he is working, which he has titled "A Comparative View of the Governments of Great Britain and America, and of the effects of them on the Liberty, the securty, the comfort, the morals and the religion of the people," through which he plans on "rooting up the poisonous principles of republicanism in England." Cobbett concludes his letter by asking Gifford "that you will be very careful how you show this letter."

Colonel Richard Gimbel Collection of Thomas Paine Papers, 1692 - Circa 1921
Title:
Colonel Richard Gimbel Collection of Thomas Paine Papers 1692 - Circa 1921
An important 18th century radical republican theorist and political writer, Thomas Paine was a leading figure in the American Revolution. Despite his humble beginnings and lack of formal education, his reasoned and persuasive writings not only influenced nascent American republican ideology, but profoundly affected the perception of government in England and France as well. His three most influential works are (1776), (1791-1792), and (1794, 1795, 1807). The Richard Gimbel Collection is a heterogeneous mix of items connected only by the fact that they were all collected by Gimbel (1898-1970) and that most were written by, to, or about the revolutionary Paine. Of primary importance are the approximately sixty-five letters or manuscripts in Paine's own hand, including Paine's 1776 manuscript notes for , his letter of January 10, 1781, in which he takes leave of his former commanding officer, Nathanael Greene, and his January 6, 1789 letter to Kitty Nicholson Few, in which he writes of his view of matrimony and other personal matters. The collection includes a series of correspondence between Thomas Paine and Samuel Adams, which were originally marked "forgeries," these appear instead simply to be the letters of two men bearing famous names.
