· Bound manuscript essay, "To John Cartwright Esq. : Letter X on the conduct of the Westminster Rump and on that of Mr. Hunt and on Sir Francis Burdett" : 42 p. : 5 Sep 1818 : (MISC 4022) : essay for Cobbett's Weekly Political Register, in the form of an open letter to Cobbett's friend and ally John Cartwright. Cobbett satirizes the "Westminster Rump" (the reform-resistant faction of the Westminster electorate), and expresses his support for the election to Parliament of his close associate Henry Hunt over the candidate backed by the increasingly conservative Francis Burdett. The volume concludes with a letter promising financial support to the widow of Jeremiah Brandreth, a Nottingham textile worker and Luddite, executed for treason in 1817. The first 34 pages are in the hand of an amanuensis, the rest in Cobbett's hand. Provenance : Robert Earl of Crewe (armorial bookplate).
