American composer Lou Harrison (1917-2003) is particularly noted for his percussion music, his exploration of cross-cultural compositional techniques, his fascination with and employment of just intonation tuning systems, and his synthesis of Asian and Western musics. Several of his compositions call for mixed ensembles of Asian and Western instruments. He was particularly interested in the gamelan and, in addition to writing for that ensemble, constructed his own ‘American gamelan.’
Lou Harrison was born in Portland OR in 1917 but spent his formative years in northern CA after his family settled there in 1926. He studied music at San Francisco State College beginning in 1935; while there he enrolled in Henry Cowell’s course “Music of the Peoples of the World.” He also studied composition with Cowell, who became a lifelong friend and influential mentor. Harrison later studied with Arnold Schoenberg at UCLA. During the 1940s, while in New York, he wrote reviews for the New York Herald Tribune and also wrote for Modern Music. He taught at various institutions, including Mills College in Oakland, CA (1937-40; 1980-85), UCLA (1942), Black Mountain College in NC (1951-53), and various other institutions. In 1953 he settled in Aptos, CA. Travels to Asia in 1961-62, as well as intensive study of the Korean double-reed p’iri, the Chinese psaltery, and the Indonesian gamelan inspired him to incorporate Asian influences into his musical style and to write works combining Eastern and Western instruments.
In addition to being a composer he was a published poet, an accomplished painter and was renowned for his calligraphic script.

Richards, Mary Caroline. Mary Caroline Richards papers, 1928-1994.
Title:
Mary Caroline Richards papers, 1928-1994.
The Richards papers document her lifetime of work as first a scholar and teacher of English literature, then her work as a poet, potter, and translator, and finally her lectures, workshops and writings in art education. The papers emphasize the period, the 1940s and 1950s, during which Richards served on the faculty of Black Mountain College. Here she formed friendships with many artists, including the musicians John Cage, David Tudor, Lou Harrison, the so-called Black Mountain poets, Charles Olson, Robert Creeley, and Robert Duncan, and in dance, Merce Cunningham and Remy Charlip. Visual artists with whom she was associated include Lyle Bongé, and Joe Fiore, as well as the many students she taught. Richards extensive correspondence (12 linear ft.) documents her warm friendships with these artists, her students, and with many others. This series comprises the largest part of the archive. Also included are manuscripts and lectures by Richards, including her dissertation, articles, translations, books, and her poetry. Many of her writings reveal her philosophy of education, and the value she placed on the arts as a means to self-expression. Manuscripts by others include those by Lou Harrison, Dick Higgins, Jackson Mac Low, and Cage's "Indeterminacy" stories, handwritten with corrections and dedicated to Richards. Other materials include her diaries, notebooks and sketchbooks, photographs and printed matter, and original artwork by Richards and her students, with some pieces by established artists.

Title:
Charles Ives oral history, 1968-1979 (inclusive).
The Charles Ives Oral History was the first documentary oral history of an American composer. Interviews with 60 people who knew and worked with Charles Ives were conducted between 1968 and 1971, and this project was the impetus for the founding of Oral History, American Music. In the interviews, family members, friends, neighbors, business associates, and musicians reminisce about one of the most significant artistic figures of the twentieth century. The project formed the basis of the award-winning book by Vivian Perlis, Charles Ives Remembered: An Oral History (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1974, and subsequently reprinted). The Ives oral history complements and gives added dimension to the Charles Ives Papers, a collection of Ives's personal papers and music manuscripts, in the Irving S. Gilmore Music Library at Yale University.

Judith Malina diaries, 1947-1959
Title:
Judith Malina diaries 1947-1959
The diaries of Judith Malina include personal reflections, a history of many aspects of The Living Theatre, and a view of the avant-garde cultural life of New York in the 1940's and 1950's. Malina documents her own struggles as a young woman and artist and also the struggle, together with Julian Beck, to create The Living Theatre. Among their contemporaries and collaborators were James Agee, John Cage, Joseph Campbell, Merce Cunningham, Dorothy Day, Richard Edelman, Paul Goodman, Lou Harrison, Alan Hovhaness, Lester Schwartz and Philip Smith. Malina discusses her work on various productions including: THE AGE OF ANXIETY, DR. FAUSTUS LIGHTS THE LIGHTS, THE IDIOT KING, PHEDRE, AND TONIGHT WE IMPROVISE. Personally, Malina discusses her relationships, her family, her views of the world of the 1950's and her commitment to pacifism. Her involvement as a pacifist, and her imprisonment with Dorothy Day and others, is described in some detail. The final years of the diary (Feb. 1956-June 1959) are incomplete. They relate to the search for and renovation of the 14th Street theater, which opened in 1959. These entries are written by several people who are not identified.
