Correspondence and papers, 1666- ca. 1900 (mostly 1756 - ca. 1900), of various members of the Duane, Featherstonhaugh, and related families. The major part of the collection is the papers of the New York lawyer, patriot, and land developer James Duane. There are also a substantial number of papers of Duane's son, James Chatham Duane, a lawyer of Duanesburgh and Schenectady, and of his son-in-law George William Featherstonhaugh, a geologist and resident of Schenectady, as well as smaller groups pertaining to Abraham, Anthony, Cornelius, and Mary Duane (wife of James Duane and daughter of Robert Livingston, Jr., third lord of Livingston Manor); and to William North, Hannah E. North, William North Duane, and the latter's mother, Mrs. A.D. Duane. The James Duane papers, ca. 1756-1798, comprise letters, deeds and other land papers, a large group of legal papers, miscellaneous certificates, commissions, bills, memoranda, etc., and pertain to such matters as: his practice of law in New York and New Jersey; relations with Great Britain and political affairs in the colonies prior to the Revolution; New York State's controversy with Massachusetts over the New Hampshire grants, and Duane's own holdings in the disputed area; his activities and interests as New York delegate to the Continental Congress, as the first federal judge for the district of New York, as a New York State senator, and as mayor of New York City; the settling of Duanesburgh, Schenectady County, New York; affairs of the Livingston family and of Livingston Manor; the settlement of estates; his property holdings in the Hardenburgh, Schuyler, and Franklin patents, and in New York City, Otsego County, Ulster County, and Socialborough, New Hampshire (now Rutland, Vermont); New York State boundaries; military and political events during the Revolutionary War; Indian affairs during the war; etc. Some of his more frequent correspondents were George Clinton, Robert R. Joshua Bloomer vs. Robert Hinckman and Philip Edsal, church wardens of the parish of Jamaica; Peter Du Bois ads.. James Jackson ex dem. Daniel Terboss et al.; James Downes vs. Francis Child; John Elam vs. Adam Fisher; Ryer Schermerhorn, John Glen, et al. vs. Jacob Fonda; William Janeway et al. vs. John Frederick Herring; Johannes Hardenburgh ads. James Jackson ex dem. Daniel Terboss; the Rector of Trinity Church and inhabitants of the City of New York ads. James Jackson ex dem. Cornelius Brower; Rex vs. John Van Rensselaer; John Doe ex dem. Featherstonhaugh's interest in agriculture and husbandry (he was corresponding secretary of the New York State Board of Agriculture), and his business interests, particularly during the 1820s, including the purchase of Wade Hampton's horse, Janus. There are also some letters and papers of his son, James Duane Featherstonhaugh, including technical data probably kept by him while working as a surveyor on the 1843-1845 Maine-Quebec boundary survey. Lamb, John, 1735-1800. John Lamb papers, 1762-1887 (bulk 1762-1799).
Title:
John Lamb papers, 1762-1887 (bulk 1762-1799).
Papers, 1762-1887 (bulk 1762-1799). Most of the collection consists of the correspondence and papers of John Lamb, with some additional items relating to his son, Anthony Lamb, his granddaughter, Agnes Treat Lamb, and other members of the Lamb, Treat, Richards and Tweedy families. Most of John Lamb's papers stem from his service in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. His correspondence consists almost entirely of letters received. A group of some 30 letters and papers relate to his activities as a leader of the Sons of Liberty in New York during 1765-1766, particularly in opposition to the Stamp Act. A smaller group, 1770-1775, concerns opposition to the British Government, the non-importation agreement, and William Goddard's attempts to organize a postal service in 1774. The main body of the collection begins in 1776 with letters pertaining to his parole after being captured by the British in Canada. From 1777 to 1783 they relate to his command of the Second Continental Artillery, operating in the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut area, and concern such topics as his promotion to Colonel of the Second Regiment, recruiting, appointments, condition of the army in 1777, administrative routine, disputes over rank and promotions, resignations, misconduct, enemy activities, troop movements, problems of moving artillery, requests for clothing and equipment, hardships of army life, defensive measures along the Hudson River, and charges against Major Timothy Bigelow for his conduct at the storming of Quebec. About 50 items, 1788-1789, are letters from various people opposed to the ratification of the Federal Constitution. 27 letters from Aaron Burr, 1796-1799, deal with Lamb's financial problems. His more frequent correspondents were Gershom Mott, Eleazer Oswald, Henry Knox, Robert Walker, Edward Carrington, William Strachan, Samuel Shaw, Alexander McDougall, Sebastian Bauman, John Ruddock, Richard Varick, Benedict Arnold, George Washington, and Andrew Moodie. There are also his commission, and 92 reports, returns, and proceedings of courts martial, 1777-1783, most concerning Lamb's corps of artillery at West Point.

Maass, Richard, 1919-1998,. The Richard Maass collection of Westchester and New York State, 1645-1910 (bulk 1770-1783).
Title:
The Richard Maass collection of Westchester and New York State, 1645-1910 (bulk 1770-1783).
Collection consists of over three hundred autograph letters, documents, and newspapers which chronicle the early history of New York State from its colonization by the Dutch to the mid-nineteenth century. The collection is, however, particularly rich in materials relating to the Revolutionary War and can provide researchers with multiple perspectives on significant events and individual military campaigns. For example, the Battle of White Plains is amply documented in the collection through correspondence from participants and observers, as well as in contemporary newspaper accounts. The arrangement of the collection, for the most part, has followed Maass's own organization. With a few exceptions, each item has been listed and described individually in the finding aid. Any additional information that has been provided by Maass regarding a specific document has been retained and placed in a folder which has been filed immediately behind the folder containing the document to which it relates. Almost every folder for each item in the collection contained a one to two page description of the document, as well as other ancillary materials such as transcriptions and/or translations of documents by Maass. These folders also occasionally contained provenance information. Any additions to the collection are to be processed as separate accretions. In addition to autograph letters and historical documents, the Maass Collection contained a small amount of printed materials. These chiefly consisted of over thirty different early American, British, and French newspapers, dating mainly from the eighteenth century, which have been organized as a separate series (Series V).

Philip Schuyler papers, 1684-1851
Title:
Philip Schuyler papers 1684-1851
Philip John Schuyler (1733-1804), a Revolutionary War general and statesman, was a prominent member of the landed aristocracy of upstate New York. He was elected to New York's colonial assembly in 1768, was a delegate to the second Continental Congress, served in the New York State Senate from 1780 to 1784 and 1786 to 1790, and became one of New York's first U.S. senators, 1797-1798. During the Revolutionary War he commanded the Continental Army forces of the Northern Dept. Schuyler was involved in the commercial development of New York and his navigation companies constructed the canals that formed the basis of the Erie Canal system. Collection consists of correspondence, accounts, military records, land records, and other papers documenting the military, political and business activities and family affairs of Schuyler. Correspondence, 1761-1804, is with military officers, members of the Continental Congress, committees of safety, and family, and concerns the conduct of the Revolutionary War in the Northern Dept., 1775-1777, and political and personal matters. Indian papers, 1710-1797, contain Schuyler's papers as Commissioner of Indian Affairs in the Northern Dept. during the war and as agent of New York State. Canal papers, 1792-1803, include correspondence, diaries, reports, surveys, accounts, and other papers relating to the construction of canals in New York. His papers as Surveyor General of New York State, 1773-1788, and public papers, ca. 1775-1796, consist of correspondence, receipts, drafts of legislation and proposals, building plans, and other papers. Financial and legal papers, 1711-1805, estate papers, 1755-1809, and land papers, 1684-1840, pertain to business activities and land holdings. Family papers, 1772-1851, contain correspondence and other papers of Schuyler family members. Military papers, 1775-1777, comprise Revolutionary War materials that were neither generated nor received directly by Schuyler.
