The first series of Hewett papers (1905-1949) contain: correspondence with several persons and organizations; financial records for the museum and school; records and correspondence of Hewett's excavations in Quirigua, Guatemala; Santa Fe Fiesta records; Panama-California Exposition records; manuscripts, including his students' papers; personal financial records; scrapbooks, which include museum visitor registers, accounting and collection ledgers and other organization's ledgers; and memorabilia. The second series of Hewett papers (1928-1929) consists primarily of correspondence from applicants concerning admittance to the School of American Archaeology. Miscellaneous papers include correspondence and manuscript pages that discuss Southwest archaeological issues. The addendum series consists of Hewett's working files: administrative and budget records for the museum; reports from the assistant director of the school; correspondence; materials from the American Institution of Archaeology; lecture notes; and eulogies. The School of American Research papers contain: correspondence with several New Mexicans, such as Frank Springer; lecture notes and articles of E. Winnifred Pitkin, MD; photographs, negatives, and articles on Mayan civilization; genealogical material of Mrs. Donizetta Hewett; and miscellaneous records from Hewett's office.

Summary: Collection consists of records of the Avery-Bowman Co. of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the personal papers of Jennie M. Avery and Grace Bowman. Avery-Bowman Co. records include records of its predecessors the Santa Fe Abstract, Realty and Insurance Agency and the Joseph B. Hayward Agency. These records include land conveyances, deeds, titles, surveys, appraisals, abstracts, and various legal documents, most of which involve property in the vicinity of Santa Fe. The personal papers of Grace Bowman and Jennie Avery reflect their respective interests in Santa Fe social, service, and professional organizations, and their close association with people such as Edgar Lee Hewett, Elizabeth Garrett, Tsianina Blackstone, and Bronson Cutting. Some files in the collection relate to the estates of Hewett, Cora Kellman, Mary Prince, and Rose Wilson; real estate transactions of Samuel B. Includes journals, correspondence, writings, notebooks, and photographs, chiefly 1890-1920, relating to his family and career with the Southwest Society, Southwest Museum, Sequoya League, Los Angeles Public Library, and other institutions. Selected correspondents include members of the Lummis family, Abeita family, Amado Chaves, Edgar Hewett, F.W. Hodge, Denis Riordan, and Mary Austin. Letters to his wife Eva Frances in 1892 are from Peru, where Lummis was a member of the Villard Expedition. Also present are drafts of Turbese Lummis Fiske's biography of her father. One of his notebooks chronicles his time as a reporter during the Apache campaign of 1886. Original photographs taken by Lummis include cyanotypes of antiquities, landscapes, pueblos, and Native Americans in New Mexico and Arizona.

Summary: Collection consists primarily of original documents, typescripts, and photocopies of a broad range of letters and diaries concerning New Mexico. Many of the documents were written by people living in or traveling through New Mexico in the nineteenth century. Collection includes correspondence of John Bouquet (some concerning the Bouquet Ranch); Edgar Hewett concerning his article on Tom T. Tobin's capture of Felipe Nerio Espinosa; and Raymond M. Crosby (with some poems sent to Crosby by Jamie Sexton Holme). Individuals with diaries in the collection include B.F. Powell (an account of a trip from Santa Fe to Pennsylvania); D.M. Leach (with information on the JTS Ranch); and John E. Whitmore. Also within the collection are correspondence, diaries, and family photographs of James E. Whitemore.

Summary: Collection consists of the Rito de los Frijoles Gazette in two volumes. Volume 1, July 10 1910 and Volume 2, 1911 and the Rito de los Frijoles Gazette magazine supplement, to August 22, 1911. The volumes appear to be written by different authors who were present at the Rito de los Frijoles camp, during the 1910 and 1911 excavations at what is now Bandelier National Monument. In each volume, there are handwritten stories, drawings, poems, newspaper articles, and descriptions of excavations by members of the camp. Most of this material is undated. Many of the stories appear on letterhead of the Archaeological Institute of America, School of American Archaeology, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Charles F. Lummis and Frank Springer authored some of the material, but most of the others are either unidentified or are signed by initials of nicknames only. Other prominent persons mentioned in the articles were Donald Beauregard, Alice C. Fletcher, Edgar L. Hewett, Neil M. Judd, Barbara Friere-Marreco, Sylvanus G. Morley, Joseph A. Munk, and Jesse Nusbaum.

Century Company records

Title: Century Company records

The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

This collection focuses on Pueblo Indian legal issues that Francis Wilson was involved with as a private attorney, following his tenure as U.S. Attorney for the Pueblo Indians. Government publications on Pueblo Indian lands, prohibition, irrigation, and Indian schools form the bulk of this collection. Additionally, there is a transcript of the New Mexico Supreme Court Case, Pueblo of Taos v. A.R. Mabry, et. al., settling discrepancies concerning the Antonio Martinez land grant. Other publications, pamphlets, flyers, and news clippings support these themes, as well as oil on the Navajo reservation, Indian welfare, reorganization of the United States Indian Service, and Dr. Edgar L. Hewett's position on the Pueblo Indians. There is a directory of Indian schools in New Mexico, containing data such as teachers' names and number of students, as well as one piece of correspondence from Wilson to his wife, when Wilson went to Washington D.C. with a delegation of Pueblo Indians (1913).
