Edgar L. Hewett was the founder and first director of the Museum of New Mexico and the School of American Archaeology (which later became the School of American Research), both in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Edgar L. Hewett was a prominent Southwest archaeologist who founded and directed the Museum of New Mexico and the School of American Archaeology (which later became the School of American Research).
Edgar L. Hewett was born in Warren County, Illinois, November 23, 1865. His early life and education were in Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri, and later in Colorado, where Adolph Francis Alphonse Bandelier and his work on the Pajarito Plateau influenced him. In 1891 he married Cora Whitford (who passed away in 1905). In 1904 Hewett received a Ph.D. in Geneva, Switzerland. December 31, 1911 Hewett married Donizetta Adalede Jones Wood (1869-1960). All his adult life, Hewett was active in all facets of anthropology, art, and culture of the Southwest, was involved in many organizations, activities, and institutions, and published many books and articles on archaeology. He passed away 1946 and his ashes were placed in a wall niche with a bronze plaque in the Museum of Fine Arts courtyard.
Quite frequently, Hewett headed multiple organizations and institutions at the same time. In 1898 he became the first president of Normal University in Las Vegas, NM, and subsequently in the 1920s taught at San Diego State Teacher's College and at the University of New Mexico. In the early 20th century, Hewett became the head of the newly established Museum of New Mexico (1909), was appointed Director of Exhibits for the 1915/1916 Panama-California Exhibition in San Diego, and led the founding of the Fine Arts Museum. Hewett was active in the Archaeological Society of New Mexico; American Research for the Archaeological Institute of America; the School of American Archaeology (School of American Research); Santa Fe Fiesta activities; and the Laboratory of Anthropology which he opened with funding from John D. Rockefeller, Jr. (1931).
Hewett spent time on excavations in the Southwest, Mexico and Central and South America. Among places, he worked in Mesa Verde, the Pajarito Plateau, and Quirigua, Guatemala. He was also politically active in the creation of the Antiquity Bill (1905) and the defeat of the Bursum Bill that proposed taking land from the Pueblos. Hewett worked with many locally as well as nationally well-known men and women. In Santa Fe, he fostered and promoted Sylvanus Morley, Alfred Kidder, and John Fletcher, worked with Jesse Nusbaum, Kenneth Chapman, Paul A. F. Walter, Wesley Bradfield, and Ralph Emerson Twitchell. He supported Tsianina, a Native American, who was the featured singer at the Santa Fe Fiesta for many years. Among the many artists he supported and/or worked with were Gerald Cassidy, Carlos Vierra, Frank Applegate and Mary Austin. Through his profession, he became friends with Frank Springer, Alice Cunningham Fletcher, William H. Holmes, Frederick W. Putnam, and Barbara Friere-Marreco, a British researcher involved with Santa Clara Pueblo.

[Peabody Museum director records, Frederic W. Putnam (1839-1915), 1870-1923].
These director records reflect the wide scope of not only Putnam's individual activities, but the museum collections themselves, the global community in which these activities took place, and the museum's prominent role in establishing American archaeology and anthropology as an academic discipline. Thus, the records contain a mixture of curatorial, administrative and professional subjects, often in the same individual items, or groups of materials.

In each volume, there are handwritten stories, drawings, poems, newspaper articles, and descriptions of excavations by members of the camp. Most of this material is undated. Many of the stories appear on letterhead of the Archaeological Institute of America, School of American Archaeology, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Charles F. Lummis and Frank Springer authored some of the material, but most of the others are either unidentified or are signed by initials of nicknames only. Other prominent persons mentioned in the articles were Donald Beauregard, Alice C. Fletcher, Edgar L. Hewett, Neil M. Judd, Barbara Friere-Marreco, Sylvanus G. Morley, Joseph A. Title:
Papers on Pueblo Indian legal issues, 1913-1956 (bulk 1917-1930).
This collection focuses on Pueblo Indian legal issues that Francis Wilson was involved with as a private attorney, following his tenure as U.S. Attorney for the Pueblo Indians. Government publications on Pueblo Indian lands, prohibition, irrigation, and Indian schools form the bulk of this collection. Additionally, there is a transcript of the New Mexico Supreme Court Case, Pueblo of Taos v. A.R. Mabry, et. al., settling discrepancies concerning the Antonio Martinez land grant. Other publications, pamphlets, flyers, and news clippings support these themes, as well as oil on the Navajo reservation, Indian welfare, reorganization of the United States Indian Service, and Dr. Edgar L. Hewett's position on the Pueblo Indians. There is a directory of Indian schools in New Mexico, containing data such as teachers' names and number of students, as well as one piece of correspondence from Wilson to his wife, when Wilson went to Washington D.C. with a delegation of Pueblo Indians (1913).

Title:
Oral history interviews of the Chaco Canyon Old Timers Reunion Oral History Project, 1990 October 5-7.
The Project consists of four interviews. Jean Markley, who lived in Chaco from 1922-1934 was interviewed by Michael Miller. She was the daughter of the first volunteer custodian at the Park, and during her tenure at the Park, was a part-time guide for visitors, worked in Pueblo Bonito's small museum, and maintained a weather station and garage on Chaco Arroyo. She reminisces about her father, Gus (Chester Augustus Griffin). Wesley R. Hurtwas a participant in the UNM field school in Jemez in 1930. He was Edgar Hewett's chauffeur in the mid-1930's, and worked as a truck driver for the excavations in Jemez and at Chaco. Hurt was involved in building the field station at Chaco and helped with the archaeological survey and excavation. Hurt was interviewed by Rose Diaz. There is a partial transcript of this interview. Alden Hayes ran errands at Chaco for Dr. Hewett in 1935, was student with the UNM field schools in 1936-37, and later became National Park Service research staff. The interview with Mr. Hayes was conducted by Marion Bell, and was interrupted and never completed. Emily Ross Mulloy, a student at the UNM field school in 1940-41, was also interviewed by Marion Bell.
