Museum of New Mexico.

The Museum of New Mexico and its Board of Regents were established by a legislative act in 1909 (1909 Laws of N.M., Chp. 4, Sec. 1- 9). During the early years the director served both the Museum of New Mexico and the School of American Archaeology, later the School of American Research. Under the Cultural Properties Act of 1969, the Museum became responsible for administering all registered cultural properties belonging to the State of New Mexico (1969 Laws of N.M., Chp. 223, Sec. 6). In 1977 a legislative act placed the Museum within the Museum Division of the newly-established Educational Finance and Cultural Affairs Department (1977 Laws of N.M., Chp. 246, Sec. 25). The same 1977 legislative act changed the name of the Museum's Board of Regents to the Museum Advisory Committee (1977 Laws of N.M., Chp. 246, Sec. 26). In 1980 a legislative act abolished the Educational Finance and Cultural Affairs Department, established the Office of Cultural Affairs, and placed the Museum of New Mexico within the Office's Museum Division (1980 Laws of N.M., Chp. 151, Sec. 25-59). The purpose of the Museum of New Mexico is to preserve, collect, interpret and exhibit the heritage of New Mexico.

After the 1914 Panama Exposition in San Diego, the New Mexico State Legislature passed a bill providing for the reconstruction of the "Cathedral of the Desert," the New Mexico Exposition building to be located near the Palace of the Governors. The building was constructed on the corner of Palace and Lincoln Avenues, and is now the Museum of New Mexico's Museum of Fine Arts.

The Segesser Hide Paintings (Segesser I and Segesser II) were purchased by the Museum of New Mexico from Dr. Andre Von Segesser of Lucerne, Switzerland in 1988.
