Title:
John Updike poems, short story, and related materials, 1970-1978.
American author John Updike was born in Shillington, Pennsylvania, and educated at Harvard. After graduation, he worked for the New Yorker, which published his first professional short story. He has gradually produced an impressive body of work, including short stories, poetry, criticism, and novels. He has been one of the most popular and critically acclaimed novelists of his generation. The collection consists of seven items, including three printed poems, including two used as holiday cards by publishers, 1974 and 1978; the short story The Indian, published as vol. XVII, No. 1 of the Blue Cloud quarterly; a signed typescript of the poem Erotic epigrams; a postcard of several people (including Updike) in period dress playing musical instruments in Ipswich, Mass., circa 1973; and an occasional paper describing the John Updike library of Sidney H. Mitchell, published as Occasional paper no. 2, April 1970, by Mary Washington College Library.

Jack Levine papers
Title:
Jack Levine papers
The papers of New York social realist painter and printmaker Jack Levine date from 1923-1999, and measure 3.2 linear feet. Levine's career is documented through biographical material, scattered letters, notes and a speech, writings, student drawings, three scrapbooks, printed material and nearly one linear foot of photographs of Levine, his family, and his colleagues.Found within the papers are two driver's licenses and several biographical accounts, and scattered letters from colleagues including one each from John Taylor Arms, Hyman Bloom, Leonard Bocour, René d'Harnoncourt, Lloyd Goodrich, Jacob Lawrence, and Homer Saint-Gaudens discussing various art-related events. There is only one carbon copy of a letter written by Levine. The correspondence includes oversized photographs of the members of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Additional photographs of the members are found in the Photograph series. Notes and writings are primarily typescripts about Jack Levine written by others. There is also a transcript of one speech, "Jack Levine Speaks Regarding the Donation of 108 of his Drawings to the Archives" delivered by Levine at the Fogg Art Museum.Artwork consists entirely of Levine's student drawings including anatomical studies, neighborhood genre scenes, copies of Old Masters, and a series of images of symphony musicians. Some of the drawings display themes that are reflected in his later paintings.Three scrapbooks contain clippings that document Levine's career and reflect his political interests. Additional printed material consists of a comprehensive collection of clippings and exhibition announcements and catalogs. There is also an announcement for a lecture by Levine, press releases, calendars of events, reproductions of artwork, programs, brochures including one for <emph render="italic">Facing East</emph>, a portfolio of Levine's prints, and three books.Photographs include numerous photographs of Levine throughout his artistic career, including images of his wife, painter Ruth Gikow, their daughter Susanna, and colleagues including Hyman Bloom, Leonard Bocour, Alexander Dobkin, Joachim Probst, and Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko. Especially notable is a series of photographs of Levine printmaking with Emiliano Sorini and Ruth Gikow. George P. Garrett Papers, 1929-2008, (bulk 1960-2000)
Title:
George P. Garrett Papers, 1929-2008 (bulk 1960-2000)
George P. Garrett (1929-2008) was a poet, editor, author, and professor of English. The papers of George P. Garrett span the years 1929 to 2000 with the bulk of the material being dated between 1960 and 1990. The papers were initially collected and assembled by author, bibliographer, and publisher Stuart T. Wright. Wright published a number of Garrett's works at his Palaemon Press and also assembled the Stuart Wright Bibliographic Collection of George Garrett (see related materials held by the Rubenstein Library). Additional materials were received by the Library directly from George Garrett. The papers document Garrett's literary career as an author of novels, short stories, poetry, and dramatic works (including filmscripts) and the tremendous influence he had as an English professor and an editor on an entire generation of writers, particularly in the South. Correspondence with numerous authors, publishers, and educators offers much information about the history of 20th-century Southern literature, publishing, and literary education. The collection is divided into the Writings Series (with subseries of Writings by Garrett, Writings Edited by Garrett, Writings by Others, and Proofs); the Correspondence Series (with 5 subseries of alphabetically and chronologically arranged correspondence); the Audiovisual Material Series; and the Miscellaneous Papers Series.

Sexton, Anne, 1928-1974. Anne Sexton Papers, 1912-1996, (bulk 1953-1974).
Title:
Anne Sexton Papers, 1912-1996, (bulk 1953-1974).
Manuscripts, correspondence, financial records, contracts with her publishers, notes from her presentations, and samples of her students' poetry comprise the bulk of the Anne Sexton Papers, 1912-1996 (bulk 1953-1974). The collection is organized into four series, with materials arranged alphabetically by title or author. The papers thoroughly explore Sexton's writing career from her earliest poems to the materials published after her death. Working copies of all the major collections of verse are included, as are multiple versions of her best known play, Mercy Street. Individual poems demonstrate Sexton's editing methods, as do various published and unpublished short stories. Diaries, interviews, articles, and materials from her many presentations fill out the Works series. Correspondence includes a variety of Sexton's personal and business correspondence. There is a large quantity of correspondence with colleges and institutions requesting readings or Sexton's attendence at various functions, as well as communication between Sexton and magazines, her publishers, fellow poets, students, friends, and family. Of particular note are letters between Sexton and Lois Amos, Michael Bearpark, Saul Bellow, Michael Benedikt, Elizabeth Bishop, Louise Conant, Morton Courier, Dorianne Goetz, Anthony Hecht, Houghton, Mifflin and Company, The Hudson Review, Barbara Kevles, Maxine Kumin, Philip Legler, Robert Lowell, George MacBeth, Jack McCarthy, John Mood, Marianne Moore, The New Yorker, Dennis O'Brien, Tillie Olsen, Oxford University Press, Sylvia Plath, Al Poulin, Alfred Sexton, Dick Sherwood, Robin Skelton, Alice Smith, William Snodgrass, George Starbuck, Brian Sweeney, John Updike, Anne Wilder, and James Wright. The remainder of the material is composed of drafts of other authors' works, fan mail sent to Sexton, school memorabilia, photographs of Sexton and others, a notebook of newspaper clippings about Sexton kept by Alice Smith, a letter from William Wallace Denslow to Arthur Staples in 1912, and a set of page proofs for a German translation of Anne Sexton: A Self-Portrait in Letters, published in 1996. At the time of their acquisition by the Ransom Center, some of the Sexton materials were closed for use. The restrictions were lifted in 2011 and the materials then housed and described as Series IV, Formerly closed materials, were made available. Included in these materials are typescript drafts of early works, correspondence, four journals containing detailed information on Sexton's therapy sessions, and audio tapes of therapy sessions.
