John Updike poems, short story, and related materials, 1970-1978.

American author John Updike was born in Shillington, Pennsylvania, and educated at Harvard. After graduation, he worked for the New Yorker, which published his first professional short story. He has gradually produced an impressive body of work, including short stories, poetry, criticism, and novels. Acknowledged as a master of prose style and winner of numerous literary awards, Updike's most characteristic theme is morality in small-town, middle class America. He has been one of the most popular and critically acclaimed novelists of his generation. The collection consists of seven items, including three printed poems, including two used as holiday cards by publishers, 1974 and 1978; the short story The Indian, published as vol. XVII, No. 1 of the Blue Cloud quarterly; a signed typescript of the poem Erotic epigrams; a postcard of several people (including Updike) in period dress playing musical instruments in Ipswich, Mass., circa 1973; and an occasional paper describing the John Updike library of Sidney H. Mitchell, published as Occasional paper no. 2, April 1970, by Mary Washington College Library.
