James Roberts Gilmore was a businessman, novelist, and historical writer.

He was born in Boston in 1822. He often used the pseudonym "Edmund Kirke". Gilmore edited "Continental Monthly" from 1862-65. In 1890, Gilmore lectured at the Peabody Institute, Baltimore MD. Gilmore was the author of "The Life of James A. Garfield" (1880) and "Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln" (1898). He was married to Laura Edmonds, daughter of New York judge, John W. Edmonds. James Roberts Gilmore died in 1903.
