The Frank Murphy Oral History Project was undertaken by the Michigan Historical Collections (now the Bentley Historical Library) and University of Michigan history professor Sidney Fine who was researching for a multi-volume biography of Michigan Governor and United States Supreme Court Justice Frank Murphy. The purpose of the interviews was both to supplement the Frank Murphy papers and to provide further information about Murphy's life and career.

The aim of the Immigration Sources Project of the Michigan Historical Collection was to collect copies of materials written by immigrants to Michigan and sent to family and friends back home in the Netherlands. The assumption was that these letters would provide the most revealing documentation of the immigrant experience.

The G. Mennen Williams and Nancy Quirk Williams oral history project was conducted by Ruth Bordin and Ruth Wasem under the auspices of the Michigan Historical Collections of the University of Michigan. The purpose was to interview individuals associated with politics and public policy during the gubernatorial administration of G. Mennen Williams, 1948-1960.

The core of the Faculty and Staff Portrait collection was originally assembled by the University Library. Over the years individual portraits and small groups of photos were added to the collection from various sources and donors.
