F. Clever Bald, director of the Michigan Historical Collections, professor of history and formerly University War Historian at The University at Michigan, was born in Baltimore, Maryland, August 12, 1897. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1920 from the University of Michigan, his Master of Arts in 1937 from Wayne University, and his Doctor of Philosophy in 1943 from the University of Michigan.
Bald taught at the Hudson School, Detroit, from 1922 to 1929, then became headmaster, serving until 1932. He taught at the Detroit Institute of Technology from 1932 to 1943. Bald came to the University of Michigan in 1943 as instructor in the Department of History; he became assistant director of the Michigan Historical Collections in 1947. He became director in 1960 and served until 1966.
Bald was a member of many professional organizations, including the American Historical Association, Mississippi Valley Historical Association, Michigan Historical Society, Michigan Academy, Algonquin Club of Detroit, Washtenaw County Historical Society, and American Association for State and Local History. He was trustee of the Michigan Historical Society (1953-55) and the President of the Society in 1955. He also is a member of Michigan Civil War Centennial Commission.
He was also author of many books and articles and brochures on Michigan history. Detroit's First American Decade, 1796-1805 (1948) and Michigan in Four Centuries (1954) were titles of two of his monographs.
F. Clever Bald died December 12, 1970.
