Hereward T. Price was born on April 23, 1880 in Amatolakinsndisamisichann, Madagascar, a son of an English missionary. He received his preliminary education in British schools, and in 1889 entered Oxford University where he received his bachelor's degree in 1903. The following year he took a position as lector at Bonn University in Germany, where he earned his doctorate before returning to Oxford to obtain his master's degree in 1911.

In 1915, Price was drafted into the German Army as an ex officio German citizen and assigned to the Russian front. He was captured by the Russian Army, but escaped through Siberia to China where until 1918 he served as a writer and editor on the Peking and Tientsin Times, an English language newspaper. He then returned to England where he taught for a time at the Orme Boys School at Newcastle. In 1921, he returned to Germany to serve as lector at the University of Kiel.

He came to the University of Michigan in 1929 to serve both as professor of English and as associate editor of the Early Modern English Dictionary. He was also for some time editor of the Middle English Dictionary.

Price was a recognized Shakespeare teacher and scholar. He was a member of the Shakespearean section of the Modern Language Association, the Oxford Bibliographical Society, the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts and Letters, and the University Research Club. He died May 10, 1964.
