The role of the Department of Photography at the Brooklyn Museum is to record accessions, furnish illustrative material for Museum publications, make photographs of objects and installations for use in publicity, research and permanent documentation, and to provide photographs for technical study. The department, known at various times as the Photographic Studio, Photo Studio and Department of Photography, has had a varying position in the administrative structure: independent, a division of the Operation Department, coordinated by a member of the curatorial staff, or answering to the Chief Conservator. The earliest documentation of in-house photographic work dates from 1909, when the Museum hired A.B. Bogart to photograph paintings and other holdings. However, the institution has been involved in photography since the late nineteenth century, when the Department of Photography was organized at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, the Museum's parent organization. The Department of Photography greatly expanded after March 1934, when Herman de Wetter joined the Brooklyn Museum staff. De Wetter was a champion of photography at the Museum, and under his supervision the physical space, staff allotted to photography and technical capacity of the photo studio were improved. Over the years, departmental staff size has varied; generally one professional photographer and one or more darkroom technicians have been on staff. Contract photographers were occasionally hired for special projects. In addition to its mission of producing photographic documentation, the Department of Photography also ventured into the curatorial arena. Herman de Wetter successfully campaigned for the Museum's recognition of photography as an art form. Starting in 1941, he organized exhibitions of art photography and developed a collection of photographs. His successor, T. Anthony Caruso, continued the curatorial efforts, but without de Wetter's leadership, activities declined, and circa 1955, Director Edgar C. Schenk dictated a return to a service-only mission. The collections de Wetter and Caruso has acquired were dispersed or remained in storage until the establishment of a curatorial post responsible for photographs in 1982.
