Sir Alfred Gilbert was a British sculptor and goldsmith, known as a popular and innovative artist. Born in London to a musical family, his education, including two different art schools, was unsatisfying, and he learned sculpture working in the studios of artists such as Edgar Boehm. He received advanced training in Paris, and began working in Europe on casting and marble sculpture. He returned to England, and achieved popular success, receiving countless commissions and becoming the favored sculptor of the royal family. His innovative use of new materials and techniques was offset by financial problems and the inability to complete so many commissions. His legacy as one of the most original Victorian artists is secure, and works such as the statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus continue to please audiences.
