Pierce Egan was an English journalist whose rowdy, bawdy tales of London night life came to exemplify the Regency. Born in London and apprenticed to a printer, Egan wrote several popular sketches but made his reputation as a sports journalist, eventually compiling one of the key histories of boxing. He is probably best remembered for Life in London, an authentic, first-hand account of the sprawling London underworld that became the unofficial guidebook to London during the Regency. Published as an illustrated serial, the work was enormously popular and influential.
