Samuel Richardson Hill was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, on 19 May 1923. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Duke University and his M.D. from Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University. Hill originally came to the University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1954. Having served as a teaching fellow at Harvard University, Hill accepted a two year appointment as director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism of th e Medical College of Alabama. Dr. Joseph F. Volker appointed Hill dean of the Medical College of Alabama in 1962. He remained dean until 1968 at which time he was named vice president for health affairs of the Medical Center. Hill served in this post until 1977 when he succeeded Joseph F. Volker as president of the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He served as president until 1987 and since then as a distinguished professor of UAB.

Samuel Richardson Hill, Jr., was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, on May 19, 1923. He received his B. A. Degree in chemistry from Duke University in 1939 and his medical degree from Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University. He completed his internship at Peter bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, and he was a teaching fellow at Harvard University where he worked in the laboratory of Dr. George Thorn. Hill served in the United States Air Force and held a position again at Harvard in the early 1950s. In late 1954, Hill came to the Medical College of Alabama. Although located in Birmingham, the Medical College was part of the University of Alabama. Hill served successively as a professor of medicine and head of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism of the Department of Medicine, dean of the Medical College of Alabama, vice president for health affairs of the University of Alabama in Birmingham, president of UAB, and distinguished professor of UAB. He played a vital role in the development of the Medical Center and served as vice president for health affairs when UAB became a freestanding university within the framework of the University of Alabama System. He served as president of UAB for ten years during which time the insitution witnessed phenomenal growth in student population and programs.
