The Office of Director of Research and Graduate Studies was established in 1955 to oversee research activities and graduate studies at the University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Joseph F. Volker, who also served concurrently as dean of the University of Alabama School of Dentistry from 1955 to 1962 and from 1962 to 1965 as vice president for health affairs, served as the only director of this office. In 1965, the responsibilities of the office were divided among other administrative officers at the Medical Center. As director of research and graduate studies, Volker expanded his ability to lobby for funds with which to increase health-related research activities and to expand the scope of graduate programs at the Medical Center. He was successful at winning major research grants from the Federal Government and private industry. Volker later served as the first president of the University of Alabama in Birmingham and first chancellor of the University of Alabama System. He died in 1989.
