In 1992 as Dr. Steve Wixson, associate professor of medicine, biomedical engineering, and computer and information sciences, prepared to leave UAB, he began an effort to update an article by Drs. S. Richardson Hill, Joseph Fontana, and Dick Shepard about computer applications at UAB. This was intended as Dr. Wixson's "parting gift" to UAB and as one element in the 25th anniversary celebration of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. Sponsored by the Department of Medicine and the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, the "History of Computing at UAB Project" lasted throughout 1992 and into 1993. Dr. Wixson conducted interviews and solicited information about computing from every UAB department and administrative office. In May 1993, he presented the results of his research as a Reynolds Historical Lecture.
