The Office of Vice President for Health Affairs was created in 1955 as a result of the T. Duckett Jones Report on the organization and administration of the University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham. The vice president for health affairs has responsibility for all health-related programs in the Medical Center and reports to the president of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Prior to the creation of an independent UAB in 1969, the vice president for health affairs reported to the president of the University of Alabama. Dr. S. Richardson Hill was named vice president for health affairs in November 1968. Hill had previously served as dean of theMedical College of Alabama from 1962 to 1968 and as director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism from late 1954 to 1962. While vice president for health affairs, Hill oversaw the expansion of the number of health-related schools at UAB and coordinated the University of Alabama System Medical Education Program. In 1977, Hill became president of UAB. He remained in this post until 1987 when he was appointed a distinguished professor of UAB.

The Office of Vice President for Health Affairs was created in 1955 upon recommendation of the T. Duckett Jones Committee. The vice president for health affairs has responsibility for all health-related programs at UAB and reports to the president of UAB. Dr. Charles A. McCallum served as the fourth vice president for health affairs from 1977 to 1987. During his tenure, he served on the Jefferson County Blue Ribbon Committee for Cooper Green Hospital. The Blue Ribbon Committee was charged by the Jefferson County Commission with making recommendations regarding indigent care in the county. The organizational meeting of the committee was held on July 29, 1982, and it met weekly to study and evaluate indigent care.
