The Office of President of UAB was established in 1969 when the University of Alabama in Birmingham became an autonomous institution within the framework of the University of Alabama System. Dr. J. Claude Bennett became the fourth president of UAB on October 1, 1993. The president of UAB resides at Woodward House atop Red Mountain in Birmingham. UAB acquired the estate in 1968-1969 from the Woodward family, and since that time, the home has served as the official residence of the president of UAB.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham became an autonomous institution within the University of Alabama System in 1969. The president has administrative reponsibility for all UAB programs, financial affairs, development, and strategic planning. Dr. S. Richardson Hill served as president of UAB from 1977 to 1987. As president, Hill reported regularly to the Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama concerning program and construction proposals, special projects, and others UAB activities. To better coordinate issues and activities involving the Board of Trustees, Hill appointed Katherine Howard as his liaison for Board relations. Hill was succeeded by Dr. Charles A. McCallum as president in 1987.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham became an independent institution within the framework of the University of Alabama System in 1969. At that time, an Office of the President was established. The president of UAB has overall responsibility for guiding and directing university programs, financial management, development, and strategic planning. Dr. S. Richardson Hill became the second president of UAB in 1977. As president, Hill guided the university through difficult financial times created by state budget proration. He also contended with efforts by Governor Fob James to reform and reorganize higher education in Alabama as well as a complex law suit filed by the Justice Department against the state. The law suit held that Alabama maintained a racially segregated, dual system of public higher education. Hill also oversaw an expansion of academic programs and the construction of new facilities during his tenure as president. In 1987, he became a distinguished professor of UAB.
