The Office of Media Relations was created in 1990, but its origin may be traced to the 1960s. During the 1960s, Fred Woodress served as assistant to the vice president for health affairs for public relations. He was often assisted in his public relations responsibilities by Gloria Goldstein-Howton who served primarily as assistant to the Medical Center deans. In 1969, Fred Woodress left UAB, and Dr. Joseph F. Volker reorganized Medical Center public relations activities at UAB. He named Gloria Goldstein-Howton as the director of the Office of Public Affairs. She was charged with centrally administering all public relations activities at UAB. The Office of Public Affairs became the Office of Institutional Relations in 1978, the Office of University Relations in 1980, and finally the Office of Public Relations and Marketing in 1990. Mike Ellis, who succeeded Goldstein-Howton in 1990, created the Office of Media Relations within the Office of Public Relations and Marketing to directly oversee public relations activities at UAB.

In 1990, Mike Ellis became assistant vice president for public affairs and marketing and director of the Office of Public Relations and Marketing. This office succeeded the Office of University Relations but remained responsible for informating the press and the public about UAB. Ellis created the Office of Media Relations in 1990 to address this responsibility. As a staff writer for UAB's Office of Media Rleations, Rick DeYampert provided information about UAB as a national resource for research, education, and health care through news articles and press releases. His efforts were primarily aimed at national science and business publications. However, he mainly served as a business writer preparing economic outlook releases for Alabama's major cities; identifying and publicizing minority programs within the Schools of Business, Engineering, and Natural Sciences; developing science and business "campus perspectives"; generating stories with a state ecology/environment slant using Department of Biology professors; and generating stories about biomedical engineering and the business school, especially the Small Business Development Center.

The Office of Media relations traces its origins to the original Office of Public Affairs that operated as part of the Medical Center from 1964 to 1969. Fred Woodress directed these early efforts and received support from Gloria Goldstein-Howton, who served as assistant to the Medical Center deans. Public relations efforts at UAB were reorganized by Dr. Volker in 1969. He named Goldstein-Howton as director of public affairs. The Office was renamed again in 1978 as the Office of Institutional Relations and in 1980 as the Office of University Relations. Ms. Goldstein-Howton remained director throughout this period. She retired in 1989, and Mike Ellis succeeded her the following year. Throughout this period, Ms. Goldstein-Howton was responsible for relations with the local, state, and national media. The Office of Public Relations and Marketing succeeded University Relations after Ellis' arrival, and he created the Office of Media Relations to inform the public and the press about UAB.
