Louis Moreau Gottschalk was an American composer and pianist, best known as a virtuoso performer of his own romantic piano pieces. He was born in New Orleans, La., and remained there until leaving to study in Europe in 1842. He returned to the United States in 1853 and spent his working career traveling widely in the United States and Latin America.
