American conductor of German birth and second conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO).
Born in 1872 in Julich, Germany, Stock began his career as a violinist in Cologne in 1891. Theodore Thomas persuaded him in 1895 to come to Chicago, where he played and conducted. When Thomas died in 1905, Stock embarked on a thirty-seven year tenure as CSO conductor. In Chicago he established an orchestra pension fund, instituted low-price and children's concerts, founded the Chicago Civic Orchestra, and introduced new compositions by Debussy, Ravel, Mahler, Schoenberg, and Hindemuth.
