Warren Homer Martin, a former Baptist minister, was appointed vice-president of the United Automobile Workers-American Federation of Labor (UAW-AFL) union in 1935. In 1936, union members voted in Martin as the UAW-AFL's first elected president. After a turbulant career with the UAW-AFL and the UAW-CIO, Martin left the labor union movement in 1941.
