Buick Local 599 of Flint, Michigan was originally organized in 1935 as Federal Local 18512. In 1936, it merged with all other Flint Federal locals to become Local 156. The arrangement was unsatisfactory and in 1939 Buick Local 599 was chartered by the UAW. This union is noted for its involvement in the anti-Martin struggles during the early years of its existence. An industrial Union Temple Association was formed in 1941 for the purpose of building a union hall.

Strikes occurred in 1941 and in 1945-46.
