The talented and versatile John Pendleton Kennedy was a businessman, politician, lawyer, and author. Born and educated in Baltimore, he was admitted to the bar in 1816 and had a successful career as a lawyer. He was elected to the Maryland house of delegates, and later served in the United States Congress, ultimately being named Secretary of the Navy in 1852. Early in his life he published three popular works of fiction, which helped shape America's national literature, and he remained active in literary circles, aiding the career of the young Edgar Allan Poe. He was also a railroad president and mill owner, and helped found the University of Maryland.
