William Hastie photographs, 1905-1994

Title: William Hastie photographs

The collection consists almost exclusively of black and white photographs. There are also a few letters and notes identifying many of the images in the collection. The photos span the years 1905 to 1994, with the bulk of them dating from the period starting with Hastie's appointment as Civilian Aide to Secretary of War Harold Stimson in 1940, through his tenure on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and ending with his death in 1976.

Rittase, William M.,. Sperry Corporation photograph collection.

Title: Sperry Corporation photograph collection. 1920-1977.

The earliest items in this collection are several photographs of the Atanasoff computer which were evidence used in a Honeywell, Inc.-Sperry Rand Corp. lawsuit. The majority of photographs document about thirty years of research and development at Sperry's Univac Division and one of its predecessor companies, Eckert Mauchly Computer Corp. The files are arranged by products and subjects and include images of the company's major computer systems. There are pictures of the ENIAC (1945-1946); BINAC, the first programmable computer (1949); UNIVAC I, II, III (1951-1960) which include 19 small, identified photos of UNIVAC I taken by John W. Mauchly himself in 1950; the 1100 series of scientific computers (1953-1962); the LARC (Livermore Automatic Research Calculator) (1960); the 490/491/494 (real time computer systems) and the solid state systems of the 1960s and 1970s. In addition there are over 200 photos of different kinds of punched card equipment (including sorters, tabulators, verifiers, collators including some made by the Powers Accounting Machine Company, computer peripherals (including printers and magnetic and paper tape converters) and computer components (control panels, chassis, magnetic and core memories, circuit boards, ferractors). This collection also includes views of different offices (Birmingham, Ala.; Dallas; Washington, etc.); labs (including the St. Paul, Minn., physics and electronic engineering research groups); and personnel from the Eckert Mauchly Computer Corp. These images trace the technological history of electronic data processing at Sperry Rand Corp.from the 1950s to the mid 1970s. Most of them, however, appear to come from advertising office files, so there are a lot of photos which include posed photographs with fashion models and female employes interacting with machines or photos of machines taken for use in advertisements. The most modern items are 35 mm slides which were used as AV presentations, but they are without their scripts. One of these is labeled "COBOL Basic Course Univac Marketing Education." There are also four reel-to-reel audio tapes. Two are identified: "Interviews and Summaries by Attorney for IBM. Interviews of Anderson, Graham, Walker, Fenn, Steele. Re: BINAC at Northrup." One is identified: "Mendelso(h?)n interview, Nov. 2, 1967" and the other "Dr. Pierce interview, Nov. 3, 1967."

Gaylord P. Harnwell Papers

Title: Gaylord P. Harnwell Papers

The first series consists of biographical material of Harnwell as represented in two bio files, a file of early job offers to him, a file of family tree, an interview about his life and career, and files of obituary material and memorial articles. Also included in this series is his thesis on physics completed when he graduated from Haverford College in 1924. The second series of personal correspondence, spanning from 1953 to 1981, concerns matters of personal or family interest. The third series contains all business correspondence, administrative or professional. This series has been arranged alphabetically by subject. Major entries of this series include files of an Asian trip in 1956, a cyclotron project for the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in the year of 1940-1941, a file of Foreign Policy Research Institute of the University related to a conference on transatlantic technological collaboration in 1967, files concerning the Graduate School of Education in the period of 1961-1964, files of Iran and Pahlavi University dating from 1960 to 1980, files of the Department of Physics of the University from 1939 to 1973, a file of the Philadelphia Award he received in 1965, and files of his work with the United States military services from 1944 to 1981. The series of Administrative files include a chronologically-arranged file of administrative correspondence from 1953 to 1967, a sub-series of Desk Calendar from 1960 to 1980, a General File arranged by the initials of correspondents running from 1960 to 1981, and miscellaneous files related to the history and administration of the University or other outside organizations Harnwell was associated with. Also included in this series is a file of loyalty investigation conducted in the year of 1952-1953 concerning a Penn faculty. The series of Addresses and Lectures has been arranged chronologically, running from 1955 to 1977. Also included in this series is a taped farewell speech Harnwell made to the University Senate in 1970. The sixth series is all of teaching and research files consisting of teaching notes or reference material related to various topics in physics. The files date from 1920s to 1950s. The seventh series consists of manuscripts and notes made by Harnwell including those that were later published in book forms--Atomic Physics, Introduction to Physical Science, and Principles of Electricity and Electromagnetism. Published articles and books are to be found in the eighth series, which includes, occasionally, correspondence related to specific publishing matters. Reference reprints in the ninth series comprise basically published articles of others that Harnwell collected for his reference. The tenth series is for records of civic or governmental organizations outside the University of Pennsylvania where Harnwell served at different times. Major organizations represented in this series include the Congress of World Unity, 1973-1975; Governor's Committee on Tax Administration, 1959-1967; Governor's Council of Science and Technology, 1962-1964; Governor's Priorities Commission, 1968-1970; Governor's Tax Study and Revision Commission, 1967-1969; Greater Philadelphia Movement, 1960-1975; Greater Philadelphia Partnership, 1975-1980; Committee on Undersea Warfare of the National Academy of Sciences, 1950-1979; New York Stock Exchange, 1965-1968; Penn Central Company, 1958-1974; and the University City Science Center, 1970-1981. Series XI collects awards, diploma and certificates Harnwell received. Series XII includes portraits of Harnwell and others as well as group photographs taken on various occasions. Series XIII is of memorabilia items including a plaque of award for the support of the study of Baltic Language and Culture, Harnwell's name plate used in the New York Stock Exchange, a metal plate of appreciation from Penn students, and two academic hoods he used for graduation ceremonies at Princeton University. The fourteenth series holds all clippings, mostly from newspapers, that were originally collected by Mrs. Harnwell and pasted in bound scrapbooks. The clippings, running from 1938 all the way to 1971, record Harnwell's life and work with Penn as well as the development of the University in multifarious aspects during the period.

The S. Reid Warren papers primarily document his professional career in the field of electrical engineering and radiological physics, and in particular his role as an educator. Dr. Warren's vocation at the University of Pennsylvania represents the bulk of the collection. Though the correspondence series contains a number of files between him and University officials such as Gaylord Harnwell, Martin Meyerson, and Joseph Bordogna, it is the professional papers series which provide the greatest insight to Warren's work at Penn. The professional papers contain letters, announcements, and notes as well as a large number committee related material, 1948-1979. Warren was involved in many causes and committees some of which are reflected in this collection and include: the Education Committee of Episcopal Academy, the American Institute for Electrical Engineers, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and the International Electrotechnical Commission. There are lecture notes, n.d.; and class reunion files, 1979-1988; speeches, 1950-1980; and manuscripts and articles, 1930-1986. Documentation on Warren's research work in the field of engineering is limited. There are files relative to the development of the ENIAC and EDVAC, 1969-1984.

The Subject series provides a panorama of the life on campus during the period. This massive collection documents the life and work of Jonathan Evans Rhoads in multiple dimensions and through all major periods of his 94 long years of career. The first series represents his personal and family experiences. It consists of five sub-series including his personal and biographical material; correspondence and other records related to his family members; files of his social interest and participation in activities not directly related to his professional interest; traveling material; as well as his financial records. This sub-series also includes a group of 39 audio cassettes of interviews done in the preparation of a biography of Rhoads that continued from 1992 to 1996. The second series documents all aspects of Rhoads' professional activities as a surgeon, medical faculty and a senior university administrator. The bulk of the correspondence sub-series reflects his communication with hundreds of individuals or institutions on all kinds of subjects of mutual professional interests. Among his correspondents are Clyde Barker, Baruch Blumberg, Britton Chance, David Y. Cooper, Stanley J. Dudrick, Loren C. Eiseley, Claire Fagin, William T. Fitts, Jr., Gaylord P. Harnwell, C. Series VI consists of a large number of architectural drawings of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania prepared in the period of 1968-1973. Series VII are papers of Theresa Rhoads, mostly her correspondence and research files when she was working at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in the 1930s and 1940s.

Title: Photographs, 1905-1994

The collection consists almost exclusively of black and white photographs. There are also a few letters and notes identifying many of the images in the collection. The photos span the years 1905 to 1994, with the bulk of them dating from the period starting with Hastie's appointment as Civilian Aide to Secretary of War Harold Stimson in 1940, through his tenure on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and ending with his death in 1976.

Memorabilia documenting the development of atomic energy research and high energy physics in the United States, Europe , and Asia. Dr. Wilson was a renowned expert on designing and constructing cyclotrons and synchrotrons, serving as consultant on projects around the world. Included in his professional papers are drawings, designs and photographs of some of the buildings, accelerators and equipment he helped design, as well as some of his sculptures. Among the personal papers in the collection are some family letters, documents and photographs.
