Martha Graham (May 11, 1894 – April 1, 1991) was an American modern dancer and choreographer. Her style, the Graham technique, reshaped American dance and is still taught worldwide.[1] Graham danced and taught for over seventy years. She was the first dancer to perform at the White House, travel abroad as a cultural ambassador, and receive the highest civilian award of the US: the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction. In her lifetime she received honors ranging from the Key to the City of Paris to Japan's Imperial Order of the Precious Crown. She said, in the 1994 documentary The Dancer Revealed: "I have spent all my life with dance and being a dancer. It's permitting life to use you in a very intense way. Sometimes it is not pleasant. Sometimes it is fearful. But nevertheless it is inevitable."[2] Founded in 1926 (the same year as Graham's professional dance company), the Martha Graham School is the oldest school of dance in the United States. First located in a small studio within Carnegie Hall, the school currently has two different studios in New York City.[3] Graham was born in Allegheny City – later to become part of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – in 1894. In the mid-1910s, Martha Graham began her studies at the newly created Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts, founded by Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn,[8] at which she would stay until 1923. In 1922, Graham performed one of Shawn's Egyptian dances with Lillian Powell in a short silent film by Hugo Riesenfeld that attempted to synchronize a dance routine on film with a live orchestra and an onscreen conductor.[9] In 1925, Graham was employed at the Eastman School of Music where Rouben Mamoulian was head of the School of Drama. Among other performances, together Mamoulian and Graham produced a short two-color film called The Flute of Krishna, featuring Eastman students. Mamoulian left Eastman shortly thereafter and Graham chose to leave also, even though she was asked to stay on. In 1926, the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance was established, in a small studio on the Upper East Side of New York City. On April 18 of the same year[8] Graham debuted her first independent concert, consisting of 18 short solos and trios that she had choreographed. This performance took place at the 48th Street Theatre in Manhattan. She would later say of the concert: "Everything I did was influenced by Denishawn."[10] On November 28, 1926, Martha Graham and others in her company gave a dance recital at the Klaw Theatre in New York City. Around the same time she entered an extended collaboration with Japanese-American pictorialist photographer Soichi Sunami, and over the next five years they together created some of the most iconic images of early modern dance.[11] Graham was on the faculty of Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre when it opened in 1928.[12] One of Graham's students was heiress Bethsabée de Rothschild with whom she became close friends. When Rothschild moved to Israel and established the Batsheva Dance Company in 1965, Graham became the company's first director.[13] Graham's technique pioneered a principle known as "contraction and release" in modern dance, which was derived from a stylized conception of breathing.[14]

Martha Graham, a pioneer in the establishment of American modern dance, was one of the principal choreographers of the twentieth century. Her work, which spanned more than seven decades, resulted in the development of a movement technique and a body of 180 choreographic works. Known also for her innovative collaborations, Graham worked with sculptor Isamu Noguchi, who created over thirty-five designs for Graham works; lighting designer Jean Rosenthal; costume designer Halston; and many composers, including Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, Robert Starer, William Schuman, and Louis Horst, who acted as accompanist, composer, and music director for Graham from 1926 to 1948. Graham founded a dance company in the 1920s that continues to perform her repertory (www.marthagraham.org).

Thomas Skelton papers, circa 1953-1994
Title:
Thomas Skelton papers circa 1953-1994
The Thomas Skelton papers represent his professional career as lighting designer from the early 1950s to his death in 1994. The bulk of the collection consists of light plots, cue sheets, ground plans, draftings and other papers related to his career in dance, theater, and opera. The collection also includes some teaching papers, correspondence, interviews, newspaper clippings, and programs. Other miscellaneous material includes travel and foreign language literature accumulated by Skelton in the course of his various professional trips. The collection also includes some scenic designs and costume information retained by Skelton from individual productions. Although Skelton did occasional scenic design, most of this additional material is the work of other crafts people. Included among the papers are also lighting designs executed by others. When identified, these are listed in subseries for 'Other Designers' in each category. The production files should be consulted for full credits for a project. The materials were received with an inventory in database format. The collection has been arranged and described with separate series for material relating to theater (including opera and variety) and dance. Organization of production files has been maintained generally the way files were originally kept. Oversized light plots and designs were separated from the production files and transferred to oversized boxes. Original identification numbers of the draftings have been maintained. Where letters formerly were used to identify boxes of rolled draftings, they now identify the drawers in which the material is currently stored. In some cases, draftings listed in the database were not found with the collection.

Title:
Autograph letter signed and typed letter signed : Windsor, Vt. and St. Simons Island, Ga., to Stark Young, [no year] Aug. 31 and "Tues." [n.d.].
A touching letter on the death of Young's nephew, and sending thanks for a copy of his Feliciana. She also comments on Martha Graham's 1935 performances at Bennington: "I was [impressed] by the abstraction of her dances, by the submergence of the personal and individual, as displayed in the mask-like faces of the dancers. We all wondered if in Americans there wasn't some compensation taking place in the choice of such a form of dance. After all we are rather a mixed race, a highly excitable one, with some violence in us ... We are betraying our emotion; we are losing the power of communicating naturally the beautiful features in human beings-our self-consciousness is corking up our feelings."

Koussevitzky, Serge, 1874-1951. Serge Koussevitzky Archive, 1920-1976 (bulk: 1924-1951)
Title:
Serge Koussevitzky Archive 1920-1976 (bulk 1924-1951)
The archive is a collection of correspondence, personal and business papers, photographs, and other materials which document some of the most significant aspects of twentieth-century music. Through his work as a conductor and publisher, and his efforts to commission new musical works, Koussevitzky maintained deep ties with many of the finest composers and musicians of the day. These figures are represented in their personal and professional affiliations with the conductor. In addition to serving as a record of Koussevitzky's life and career, the collection extensively chronicles periods in the history of organizations such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center, the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, and the American International Music Fund. St. Denis, Ruth, 1880-1968. Papers of Ruth St. Denis, 1904-2007 (bulk 1930-1970).
Title:
Papers of Ruth St. Denis, 1904-2007 (bulk 1930-1970).
Subjects of the entire collection include: Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn, American dance and dancers, dance instruction and notes, exercises and warm-up routines, various dance types (international as well as American), famous dancers from around the globe, Denishawn dancers, the Ruth St. Denis Center, the Ruth St. Denis Foundation, the Ruth St. Denis Theatre Intime, Jacob's Pillow dance festival, American Dance Film Association, Society of Spiritual Arts Church, the various teachers and pupils at St. Denis' dance studio and school, the Orient trip the Denishawn dancers took in 1926, as well as dance productions and events St. Denis put on throughout her career. There is also much material about St. Denis' effort to have her studio and school become a non-profit entity and her desire to create an artist colony in Hemet, California. More specifically, several dancers show up in the notebooks and photographs, including: Harold Kreutzberg, Peter di Falco, La Meri, Karoun Tootikian, Miriam Schiller, Jean Léon, Gladys Bowen, Antonio Gades, Devi Dja, Doris Humphrey, Mary Wigman, and Martha Graham. The series "Binder" includes 42 volumes of material related to Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn, the Denishawn dancers, etc. They are like scrapbooks and contain several different formats of materials including photographs, clippings, programs, dance notes, correspondence and financial documents. The material in the binders were left in their original order (as they came to the Huntington Library). It seems that the majority of the material was gathered and put together by Dorothy Lee Trifal, Ruth St. Denis' assistant and the manager of St. Denis' dance studio. The first 19 volumes are organized (and were titled) with dates and date spans. The next 23 volumes are organized alphabetically by their titles (ex. "American Dance Film Association"). Some of the titles are cataloger supplied. The Photographs, Negatives, and Slides series contains 409 photographs, negatives and slides. Although the majority of the photographs are of Ruth St. Denis in dancing poses, there are several other categories of photographs including: Ted Shawn, dance performances, special events and celebrations, other dancers, the dance studio and students, the film "He is Risen," and Jacob's Pillow. Photographs can also be found in the Miscellaneous series in the material regarding "The Dancing Prophet" as well as the Oversize series. The Ephemera and Miscellaneous series contains a variety of formats including: programs, publications (magazines as well as printed books), miscellaneous material such as one letter by Forrest Coggan to Dorothy Lee Trifal, and a postcard from Forrest Thornburg to Dorothy Lee Trifal. It also contains several printed manuscripts written by St. Denis including "Dialogue for a Temple for Prayer For Artists," "Poems," "The Divine Dance," "Current Biography," and a notebook belonging to St. Denis. There is also a copy of the published book Lotus Light written by Ruth St. Denis in 1932. Also included is a scrapbook with clippings and photographs of dancers. There is one box dedicated to material related to the film "The Dancing Prophet" about Ruth St. Denis (the film reel is in the A-V series). The audio-visual material consists of cassette tapes, reel-to-reel/magnetic tapes, albums (records), and one VHS tape. This material consists of interviews with Ruth St. Denis, speeches by St. Denis, her reading from her journals, music, some composed by Clifford Vaughan, and dance performances. There is also a reel of the film "The Dancing Prophet." A lot of what is on the reel-to-reel/magnetic tapes and some of the albums can also be found on the cassette tapes. The majority of the A-V material is undated. It is organized by type/format and then alphabetical by title (if it had one). The Oversize series contains: Sheet music (some with dance instructions and photographs, which are arranged alphabetically by title), some of which is written by Clifford Vaughan, images of Ruth St. Denis, and two photograph albums with photographs of various dancers and celebrities (most of which are not identified), one of these is also a scrapbook with programs from her various performances. The series also contains oversize photographs of Ruth St. Denis. The Individually Housed Items include a glass plate negative of Ruth St. Denis ("Devi Ja," 1951), a copy of the two-volume Ruth St. Denis: pioneer & prophet: being a history of her cycle of oriental dances by Ted Shawn, a poster of Ruth St. Denis, and a banner of Ruth St. Denis.

Martha Graham Dance Company records, 1944-1955
Title:
Martha Graham Dance Company records 1944-1955
Martha Graham (1894-1991) was a seminal figure in contemporary dance. Her approach to dance embodied principles of contraction and release which she merged, for the first time in dance, with architecture and sculpture on the stage. This collection of her dance company records represents only a small piece of that legacy which still continues today.

Louis Horst collection 1928-1964
Part of the bequest of the late , this collection consists of five groups of manuscript materials: [Personal] Correspondence, Business Correspondence, Manuscripts, Records, and Miscellaneous items (mostly photostats of drawings and paintings). The personal correspondence, excepting a folder of letters from his mother to ca. 1928-29, is primarily social and congratulatory, i.e., telegrams, birthday cards, postcards, and Christmas cards. The business correspondence is almost exclusively concerned with [UNK] Observer, the magazine founded in 1934 and edited until his death in 1964. The majority of the manuscripts, which comprise the bulk of the collection, are edited articles for Dance observer. There is, however, a notebook containing classes in pre-classic dance forms and modern dance forms, and a second notebook, possibly kept by , for a class in dance composition taught by in [UNK]. The records and miscellaneous items are scant representations of a career fully documented in: *MGZRS , 1884-1964. Scrapbooks, 1915-1959. Title:
American Ballet Theatre records 1936-ca. 1967
American Ballet Theatre was founded in 1939 with the intention of creating an American company of international stature, a museum of the dance, “which would preserve the best of the classic tradition of Europe and at the same time lay the foundation for a new tradition, American in concept and spirit.” Its guiding principle was to encourage collaboration between artists with no single choreographer taking precedence. The records of the company attest to the pursuit of these goals.

"Frank Shawl is the co-founder with Victor Anderson of the Shawl-Anderson Dance Center [a.k.a. Shawl-Anderson School of Dance] in Berkeley. Frank has been active as a teacher, performing dancer and choreographer in the Bay Area for approximately 43 years. The Shawl-Anderson Dance Company was an active dance repertory group in the '60's and '70's and spawned many of today's prominent dance artists.Prior to coming to the Bay Area, Frank performed mainly in New York City. He appeared in numerous Broadway and network television shows and toured throughout the United States and Canada. He appeared in concert with the late Charles Weidman and for over eight years with the May O'Donnell Dance Company. He returned to New York in the role of assistant to Miss O'Donnell, as well as having taught, directed, and performed in Amsterdam and throughout the Netherlands. In recent years, Frank's return to performing has given him the opportunity to perform works choreographed by Remy Charlip, Josie Moseley, Ellen Bromberg, Della Davidson, Bonnie Merrill, June Watanabe, Joan Lazarus, Diane Tokaji, Priscilla Regalado and Sonya Delwaide. From 1997-1999, he performed as a member of "New Shoes, Old Souls Dance Company", a Bay Area group of active performers and choreographers over the age of 40."--www.shawl-anderson.org.
