Isabella Augusta Persse (1852-1932) married Sir William Henry Gregory (1817-1892). After her husband's death, Lady Gregory became an author and playwright. She also acted as manager of the Abbey Theatre from 1904-1912.
Isabella Augusta Gregory, Lady Gregory (1852-1932), the Irish playwright and poet. For a fuller account of her life and achievements see the Dictionary of National Biography .
Lady Isabella Augusta (Persse) Gregory was an Irish playwright, director, producer, poet, folklorist, translator and historian, co-founder of the Irish National Theater Society at the Abbey Theater, and patron of the Irish Literary Renaissance.
Irish playwright.
Irish playwright Lady Gregory was born March 15, 1852 in Roxborough, Ireland. She was active in the Irish literary revival and was a cofounder in 1899 of the Irish National Theater Society at the Abbey Theater, which she managed for a time. Lady Gregory wrote numerous plays, most of which were produced at Abbey Theatre. Her play, The Dragon, was produced in Dublin at Abbey Theatre in 1919 and published by Talbot Press in 1920. She died May 22, 1932 in Coole, Ireland.
Lady Gregory was an Irish writer.
Unlike her Anglo-Irish contemporaries, Lady Gregory immersed herself in Irish culture, earning her recognition as both "the mother of Irish drama" and "the mother of Irish folklore." Although she founded the Irish National Theater Society and the Abbey Theater for political reasons, her own plays, resonant with Irish language and metaphor, proved innovative and influential. Playwright, poet, historian, folklorist, and producer, she is perhaps best remembered as a sponsor of the Irish literary revival, particularly Yeats and Synge.
Irish writer Lady Gregory (1852–1932) was instrumental in the cultivation of theatre during the Irish Literary Renaissance.

Typed letter signed, with an autograph postscript : Janeville, Slane, County Meath, Ireland, to Lady [Isabella Augusta] Gregory, 1914 June 24.
Sending her a play and hoping that she may think it good enough for production in the Abbey Theatre: "It has struck me quite recently that there are other things a peasant poet may write about than the blackbird singing in a rainbow. The plot of the enclosed play came to me as as [sic] plots come to most authors, after careful consideration and a thorough knowledge of the people about whom they write. I conceived the idea of the play the other week on the bridge of London, and cast a rough synopsis of it on a set along the Embankment."

John Quinn papers, 1901-1926
Title:
John Quinn papers 1901-1926
John Quinn (1870-1924) was a corporation lawyer in New York City who amassed an important private collection of paintings, drawings and sculpture as well as books and manuscripts of contemporary authors. In addition to promoting modern and avant-garde art in all forms, he particularly encouraged the work of members of the Irish Literary Revival, the artists of the Paris School, and English and American writers of his time. In 1923 he sold his manuscript and library holdings to subsidize his art collection. Collection consists mainly of correspondence, with writings, printed matter and photographs that document Quinn's artistic and political interests. Correspondence, 1901-1924, is with artists, art dealers, critics, poets, playwrights, booksellers, publishers, and members of his family. Files of letters and letterbooks contain correspondence relating to his interest in the artistic and literary scene in America and abroad, events in Ireland especially during the Home Rule movement, his purchase of paintings, sculpture, first editions and manuscripts of contemporary literature, and the sale of his library and manuscript collection. Also includes typescripts of literary works, typescript of the catalog of Quinn's art collection, ledgers, sales and exhibition catalogs, periodicals, and photographs of Quinn with individual artists and group portraits.

Foster-Murphy collection, 1900-1969
Title:
Foster-Murphy collection 1900-1969
Jeanne R. Foster (1879-1970), creator of the collection, was an American poet, assistant editor of The Review of Reviews and American editor of Transatlantic Review. She met a significant group of writers, poets and artists through John Quinn who was a New York lawyer, collector of modern art and active patron of the arts. The Foster-Murphy Collection reflects the artistic and, to a lesser degree, the political ferment of the period from 1907 to the 1920s. The bulk of the collection consists of letters to Jeanne R. Foster, John Quinn, William Butler Yeats and others, from artists, art dealers, writers, editors, poets, musicians, and scholars. The remainder of the collection is composed of diaries kept by Foster from 1920 to 1925; typescripts of articles, lectures and poems by Foster and others; photographs (a few by Brancusi); newsclippings; and memorabilia.

Robinson, Lennox, 1886-1958. Lennox Robinson papers, 1892-1954.
Title:
Lennox Robinson papers, 1892-1954.
The Lennox Robinson papers include several correspondence series, 40 play manuscripts including, in most cases, multiple drafts, 3 short stories, much of his non-fiction writings as well as his scrapbook of newspaper clippings and playbills. In the latter boxes there are some manuscripts of lesser-known writers Robinson collected himself. Nearly every aspect of this series has to do with Robinson's involvement in Irish Theatre. The manuscripts of Robinson's plays include drafts of his earliest plays like Harvest, the more well-known plays like The Clancy Name, White-Headed Boy, The Big House, and The Lost Leader. The non fiction writings consist of 43 of Robinson's "At the Play" columns as well as several of his essays on Irish topics and his partially autobiographical novel The Boy from Ballineen. In addition, this series contains 11 of the "I Sometimes Think" manuscripts as well as over 20 other essays on primarily Irish artists. Finally there are three scrapbooks of press cutting, play programs, and posters from the years of Robinson's activity with the Abbey Theatre. Included in the correspondence are the William Butler Yeats letters, the Lady Gregory letters, as well as letters from AE, George Bernard Shaw, Shawn O'Casey, Gerard Fey, Sean O'Faolain, Nora Robinson, Oliver, St. J. Gogarty, and James Stephens.

Title:
Lady Gregory papers, 1879-1932.
The series consists of papers of Lady Gregory from 1879-1932. The bulk of the family correspondence (1879-1922) contains letters written by her husband William Henry Gregory and their son William Robert Gregory, as well as a few letters written by Lady Gregory to other family members. Her husband's letters include accounts of his travels in the early 1880's and her son's letters describe his activities at school and, later, his military service. Lady Gregory's general correspondence relates to a wide range of matters including her literary career and association with the Abbey Theatre. Correspondents include writers Padraic Colum, Sean O'Casey, and George Russell; actors William Fay and Arthur Sinclair, associates of the Abbey Theatre Michael Dolan and Lennox Robinson; and others. Among Lady Gregory's writings are a variety of items including published and unpublished manuscripts of dramatic and poetic works, prose work, an 1918 diary, and notebooks containing notes on the Gregory family genealogy and recollections of Robert Gregory. The printed material in the series includes four scrapbooks (1895-1913) containing clippings relating to her published works and the Abbey Theatre, pamphlets, and Abbey Theatre programs. The series also consists of a few financial and legal papers relating to the Gregory family and some miscellaneous papers.

Gregory, William, 1766-1840. William Gregory papers, 1794-1838.
Title:
William Gregory papers, 1794-1838.
The series consists of papers of William Gregory from 1794-1838. The bulk of the collection is comprised of records that relate to Gregory's service as Civil-Undersecretary of Ireland. The records include incoming and outgoing correspondence, account books, and official papers. The incoming (1799-1838, bulk 1813, 1819-1830) and outgoing (1807-1835) correspondence is mainly between Gregory and the Chief Secretaries concerning the Irish administration, Catholic emancipation, famine, and civil unrest. The correspondents include Sir Robert Peel, Charles Whitworth, Charles Grant, Charles Talbot (Baron Talbot), Henry Goulburn, Richard Wellesley, William Saurin, William Lamb (Viscount Melbourne), Francis Egerton (Earl of Ellesmere), William Vesey Fitzgerald (Baron Fitzgerald and Vesey, and Henry William Paget (Marquis Angelsey). Among the professional papers are the account books of the Irish Secret Service (1811-1826), the account of Secret Service Money (1806-1821), and a civil list of Ireland listing state officers, civil servants, their salaries and tenure. The papers also contain typescripts for Lady Gregory's, MR. GREGORY'S LETTERBOX. The work is comprised of letters written by Gregory from 1813-1835, which were transcribed and edited by Lady Gregory for publication. Many of these letters however, were not included in the published volume. The small amount of personal papers is comprised of letters from family members, personal account books (1790-1813, 1831-1839), and datebooks (1812-1836). Letters from William Gregory to his grandson, William Henry Gregory are found in William Henry Gregory's papers.

Henderson, Alice Corbin, 1881-1949. Papers, 1861-1987 (bulk 1920-1949).
Title:
Papers, 1861-1987 (bulk 1920-1949).
The collection comprises correspondence, literary manuscripts, notes and notebooks, clippings, galley proofs, photographs, and date books ranging in date from 1861-1987, reflecting various aspects of not only Henderson's life, but also those of her husband, artist and architect William Penhallow Henderson, and her daughter, Alice Oliver Henderson Evans Rossin Colquitt. Henderson's published and unpublished works are represented by transcripts, notes, galley proofs, and clippings, and her involvement with Poetry: A Magazine of Verse (1912-22) and the Poetry anthologies are reflected in correspondence with editor Harriet Monroe, Ezra Pound, and attorney Roberts Walker. Other correspondents include: Witter Bynner, D.H. and Frieda Lawrence, Vachel Lindsay, Mary Austin, Edgar Lee Masters, Haniel Long, Carl Sandburg, and Ralph Fletcher Seymour, among others. There is extensive family correspondence, notably with Mabel Dodge Luhan, especially during periods of financial and marital difficulity in the 1930s. After Alice and William Henderson moved to Santa Fe, NM, in 1916, they became interested in Native American issues, especially those surrounding the local Navajos. Through their individual talents, the Hendersons founded or supported projects such as the Poet's Round-up, the Navajo House of Religion (now the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian), the Eugene Manlove Rhodes Memorial Association, the Writer's Edition, the Works Progress Administration Federal Writers' Project guide to New Mexico, and the Pueblo-Spanish Building Company, all of which are represented in the collection. Alice Henderson Rossin continued much of her parents' work. She revived the Poet's Round-up in 1968, exhibited her father's art works, and worked with both of her parents' biographers. Her personal correspondence, primarily from the 1930s, includes letters from King Vidor, Lady Bird Johnson, Oliver La Farge, R.F. Seymour, and Jouett and Dorothea Todd, as well as family members. Rossin served as a board member of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation from 1962-78. Family correspondence that she added to this collection includes letters between her second mother-in-law, Clara Rossin, and composer Ernest Bloch, music critic Lawrence Gilman, and violinist Joseph Szigeti, 1912-28.
