Salvador Dalí (b. May 11, 1904, Figueres, Spain–d. January 23, 1989, Figueres Spain) was a prominent Spanish surrealist artist. Dalí was a skilled draftsman, best known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work. His painterly skills are often attributed to the influence of Renaissance masters. His best-known work, The Persistence of Memory, was completed in August 1931. Dalí's expansive artistic repertoire included film, sculpture, and photography, in collaboration with a range of artists in a variety of media.

Geiger, Raymond. Letters received, 1917-1931 (bulk 1928-1930).
Title:
Letters received, 1917-1931 (bulk 1928-1930).
The collection comprises 47 letters and cards sent to Raymond Geiger between 1917 and 1931 by twelve correspondents, mainly book illustrators. Most of the letters reflect Geiger's consistent endeavor to encourage and help talented artists to establish themselves in their careers. He writes about their merits in his articles published in the monthly review L'amour de l'art, and also uses his connections in the world of art to recommend the young artists to the Parisian publishers of illustrated books, well known for their high artistic standards as well as for their ill temper. Such is the case of the publisher Henri Babou, whose name appears in many of the letters in this collection. The artists describe their work in progress, their plans for the future and their struggle with the publishers. All of them express their gratitude to Geiger who made possible their achievements. The fifteen letters of Edy Legrand are almost a diary of his life from January 1928 to the end of 1929, which culminates with the publication of his major vork, Pentatoli: "Trois ans de ma vie...trois ans à travers tous les doutes et les pires difficultées." Berthold Mahn sends twelve letters full of projects current and future, which are crowned in 1930 by the simultaneous release of five illustrated books. He thanks Geiger for his elogious article, a prelude of his book about Mahn published by Editions Babou the same year. Ten letters from Hermann Paul (1920-1931) bring last moment information for the study to be published by Geiger about the artist in 1929. A letter from 1931 refers to his position towards Babou and the Légion d'honneur. The collection includes letters received from other artists grateful for Geiger's praise of their works in L'amour de l'art: from Gernèz for his Chemin de Paradis and Génitrix (1917, 1918); from Ceria (1929, 1930) for his illustrations to Martha Bibesco's novel, Catherine-Paris; from Daragnès for his Tristan et Iseult; from Salvador Dali, recently settled in Paris, for Geiger's warm letters, which are "la récompense d'un long effort." Other correspondents are A. E. Marty (1929), the philologist Ferdinand Brunot (1928) and the writer Ignace Legrand (1930), who rejects the "brutale franchise" of Geiger's criticism of his novel and invites him to an open discussion.

Julien Levy Gallery records, 1857-1982
Title:
Julien Levy Gallery records 1857-1982
Julien Levy (1906-1981) was a pioneering New York art dealer of the 1930s and 1940s. He was introduced to the art world in Paris by Marcel Duchamp, who he met in New York in 1926. In Paris he met photographers and artists, including Man Ray, Berenice Abbot, and his future wife Joella Haweis, daughter of Dadaist muse Mina Loy. Upon his return to the United States, Levy worked briefly at the Weyhe Gallery before opening the Julien Levy Gallery at 602 Madison Avenue. In 1932, Levy mounted “Surrealisme,” an exhibition that introduced the Surrealist art movement to New York. This collection documents the career of prominent art gallery owner Julien Levy. The records date from 1857 to 1983 and include correspondence, exhibit announcements and invitations, scrapbooks, gallery financial ledgers, audio-visual materials, and personal papers such as letters, diaries, appointment books and calendars. The material in this collection reflects the course of Levy’s life, beginning with childhood letters and elementary school papers, and ending with Levy’s obituary and memorials. The records follow Levy, fresh from Paris, as he opens his gallery in New York and quickly becomes one of the most well-known and respected art dealers in the United States. This star-studded collection features correspondence with some of the most celebrated artists of the Surrealist and other art movements, including Salvador Dali, Arshile Gorky, Frida Kahlo, Man Ray, and Marcel Duchamp. The bulk of material dates from 1933 to 1949, and the 1970s. Researchers should note that the collection contains few records from the 1950s and early 1960s.

Castellón, Federico. Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1933-1971, n.d.
Title:
Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1933-1971, n.d.
The earliest letters from Castellón cover his travels in Europe and his response to the countries and art there, the progress of his work and it's reception. Letters from Madrid relate anecdotes about Salvador Dalí and the delights of the museums there. Paris news includes Castellón's inclusion in a 1935 exhibit of Spanish artists working in Paris and his sighting Alice B. Toklas and Gertrude Stein in the galleries. Upon Castellón's return to New York, his lengthy letters detail the progress of his work and the financial demands of his family, sharing a studio with Henry Mangravite, his surrealist style's reception, his many plans to escape to "Utopia," money trouble and a thank you note to Zigrosser for a loan that enables Castellón to get away to New Orleans. Zigrosser arranged for Catellón to spend the summer of 1939 at Yaddo, a colony Castellón would return to. His letters from Yaddo recount the suicide of Richard Berman (Arnold Höllriegel), a refugee reporter from Vienna. A longer letter from Yaddo describes in detail his life there, the food, the architecture, Marc Blitzstein's political turmoil, Elizabeth Ames and her affair with Leonard Ehrlich, his dislike of Rudolf von Ripper, and the others at Yaddo: Nathan Asch, Martin Gumpert, John Cheever, David Diamond, Herman Broch, Jean Starr Untermeyer, Maureen Whipple and Newton Arvin. The letters are full of details and gossip. Also mentioned is his search for commercial work and his continuing money trouble. Some letters are addressed to Laura Canade, another employee at Weyhe Gallery and Zigrosser's future wife. In 1940, Castellón writes about serigraphy, commercial work at PM magazine, his fiancée Hilda Field and the new residents of Yaddo: Bruce M itchell, Miriam Cohen, Agnes Tait, Marion Greenwood, George Platt Lynes, Monroe Wheeler, and Katherine Anne Porter. After Zigrosser left Weyhe Gallery for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, he continued to support Castllón's career, supporting his application for a Guggenheim Fellowship. Castellón's letters describe meeting Alfred Barr and Una E. Johnson, his travels in the American southwest on his Fellowship, his concerns about being drafted and his 1942 stay at Katherine Anne Porter's farm. In 1943, Castellón was drafted, and his few, very emotional letters from this time describe his depression and alienation from art, his camouflage assignment under scenic designer Jo Mielziner, and eventual posting to India and China. From the war on, the correspondence is less frequent, but the letters are still jammed with details, descriptions and plans. Comments about the new painting, critics and exhibitions have a touch of bitterness to them. Castellón describes the new painting as empty, insincere, falsely intellectual rule-bound. His surrealist, representational style is out of favor. He writes about the changes at Weyhe Gallery and his growing discontent with Erhard Weyhe. He continues to write about plans for print portfolios and travelling, his Guggenheim Fellowship to Rome, and his friendship with John Taylor Arms and Adolf Dehn, two artists from an earlier generation. There is a gap in the correspondence from 1952 to 1963. A very long letter from Castellón details financial transactions, various career alternatives, printmaking ventures and the difficulties of teaching. He describes several projects with Atelier Desjobert in Paris and Abe Lublin in New York (Lublin is also doing mountains of work with Jack Levine), and his own on-going relationship with Associated American Artists and Sylvan Cole. Late letters describe his own print collecting in Europe and his frustration at the Philadelphia Museum of Art's declining to accept a complete set of his prints because they would not take his printing plates as well. The last letters describe Castellón's approaching departure to take up residence in Paris. Included in the printed matter are two issues of a publication of James Monroe High School in New York, exhibition announcements, clippings, reproductions of Castellón's work, and some exhibition catalogs.

American Ballet Theatre records 1936-ca. 1967
American Ballet Theatre was founded in 1939 with the intention of creating an American company of international stature, a museum of the dance, “which would preserve the best of the classic tradition of Europe and at the same time lay the foundation for a new tradition, American in concept and spirit.” Its guiding principle was to encourage collaboration between artists with no single choreographer taking precedence. The records of the company attest to the pursuit of these goals.

General artists' files contain background and reference information on numerous contemporary artists, performers, and art-related organizations. More information exists for Alexander Calder and Harry Lieberman than the other names represented in the general files. Lee also arranged provenance notes and photographs of artwork into notebooks, presumably including many of the artists represented by the gallery. There is a significant amount of material in the notebooks on Alexander Calder, Robert Indiana, Lowell Nesbitt, Ben Shahn, Victor Vasarely, and Max Weber. Financial artists' files contain correspondence with artists and patrons concerning the sale of artwork by both the Eva Lee Gallery and J. B. Neumann of the New Art Circle Gallery, scattered artwork, printed material, photographs of artists, and checks signed by Neumann and endorsed by miscellaneous artists. Eva Lee worked on the estate of J. B. Neumann and collected and interspersed his files with her own. These files include letters from Josef Albers, Thomas Hart Benton, Alexander Calder, Christo, Joseph Cornell, Robert Indiana, and a postcard of Calder's studio from Ben Shahn. There are also watercolor sketches by Clifford Odets, an exhibition catalog autographed by Ben Shahn, and photographs of Marsden Hartley, Jacques Lipchitz, composer Frederick Loewe, Paul Mommer, Mert Simpson, and Curt Valentin with Andrew Ritchie. Eva Lee Gallery artists' consignment and sales files primarily contain photographs of artwork and notes concerning sales of specific artwork by the Eva Lee Gallery. Also found in these sales files are scattered letters, receipts, and printed material. There is a significant amount of material for Ben Benn, Alexander Calder, Lovis Corinth, Salvadore Dali, Lyonel Feininger, George Grosz, Marsden Hartley, John Hopkins, Rene Magritte, and John Marin. It is assumed that Eva Lee separated the two latter sets of artists' files containing sales records. Also found in the collection is a photocopy of the Korvettes Art Galleries auction catalog, which lists artwork sold at a 1970 auction liquidating the holdings of the Douglaston, New York gallery.

Soby, James Thrall, 1906-1979. James Thrall Soby papers, 1930-1979.
Title:
James Thrall Soby papers, 1930-1979.
Papers include correspondence, research notes, ephemera and photographs of works by artists about whom Soby wrote, transcripts, an unpublished manuscript titled "French Romantic Art" (written in 1959), records relating to The Museum of Modern Art, the Smith College Museum of Art, Williams College, the disposition of the Kay Sage Tanguy estate, travel notebooks, diaries, family papers and photographs. The Soby Papers are of importance to historians involved in advanced research in 20th century art. Soby was influential, for example, in making Surrealism widely known to the American public; his notes, transcripts, early documentation (photographs, printed matter and ephemera) and correspondence with Gala Dali, Man Ray, André Breton, Yves Tanguy and Kay Sage (whose estate he administered), among others, constitute an important source for scholars, as does his extensive documentation on Bacon, Balthus, Giorgio de Chirico, Miró and Shahn. These papers are also of sociological importance, for as art critic of the Saturday Review of Literature, a periodical of the American intelligentsia during the1940s and 1950s, Soby wrote with a liberal mind untainted by politics. Typescripts and notes for many of these articles are included in Series III. The Soby Papers are important for an understanding of the Museum's history. For example, memoranda and correspondence in Series III clarify Soby's role in the reorganization of the Museum in the 1940s, when his sensitivity and expertise were crucial.
