Apologizes for not being social but she had had a very bad cold. Goes on to say that it was exceedingly kind of her to invite her to the party. Feels sorry she couldn't make it. She was even too sick to attende the Howells's dinner.

Gilder, Jeannette L. (Jeannette Leonard), 1849-1916. Papers of Jeannette L. Gilder [manuscript], 1879-1909.
Title:
Papers of Jeannette L. Gilder [manuscript], 1879-1909.
The collection consists chiefly of correspondence, much of it connected with Gilder's position as co-founder and editor of The Critic (1881-1906), a weekly review of literature, fine arts, and drama published in New York City. Included is a letter (1879 February 5) from Augustin Daly (?) asking Miss Gilder to attend his talk about the stage, even if she has heard it before, as he will try to say something new. Horace Howard Furness writes her (1883 February 6) declining to review or write for The Critic but suggesting that Gilder approach his sister, Mrs. A.L. Wister, to do so. The collection also contains a letter (1884 August 26) from Gilder to Mr. Bouton (?) informing him of a special issue of The Critic soon to be published, assuring him that "it is a number you want to be represented in." Gilder replies (1897 May 28) to Mr. Estes's request for a frank opinion of an actress's performance, giving many reasons why she does "not have any hope for Miss Rowland on the stage." Also included is a letter (1900 January 5) from Frances Folsom Cleveland commenting on Grover Cleveland's health, and promising to send photographs of them both. An undated letter from actress Kate Field quotes several favorable reviews of her portrayal of Laura Hawkins and gives Gilder permission to use them. Completing the collection is a print of Field with the accompanying inscription written on Lilian Whiting's business card: "Kate Field at fourteen, from an oil painting. With ever faithful regards to Miss Gilder."

Harris, Joel Chandler, 1848-1908. Letters, 1870-1909.
Title:
Letters, 1870-1909.
Letters of Harris to Georgia Harrison Starke and Nora-Belle Starke, sister and niece respectively of James P. Harrison, editor of the Monroe Advertiser of Forsyth, Ga., and onetime employer of Harris. The letters give accounts of the vicissitudes of Harris' career as a newspaperman and contain occasional comment on his own literary works and those of his contemporaries. In one letter he mentions that his verses "To Nora Bell" have been pronounced "very fine" by Paul Hayne. Several earlier letters, of an introspective cast, give the author's own account of his character and personality. Included also is a letter of application, probably to Stilson Hutchins of the Washington (Ga.) Post, and a note to Miss Jeannette Gilder concerning his "Plough-Hands' Song."

Gilder, Jeannette L. (Jeannette Leonard), 1849-1916. Papers: 1879-1909.
Title:
Papers: 1879-1909.
The collection consists chiefly of correspondence, much of it connected with Gilder's position as co-founder and editor of The Critic (1881-1906), a weekly review of literature, fine arts, and drama published in New York City. Included is a letter from Augustin Daly (?) to Gilder (1879 Feb. 5), asking her to attend his talk about the stage, even if she has heard it before, as he will try to say something new. Horace Howard Furness writes her (1883 Feb. 6), declining to review or write for The Critic but suggesting that Gilder approach his sister, Mrs. A.L. Wister, to do so. The collection also contains 1 letter from Gilder to Mr. Bouton (?), 1884 Aug. 26), informing him of a special issue of The Critic soon to be published, assuring him that "it is a number you want to be represented in." Gilder replies (1897 May 28) to Mr. Estes's request for a frank opinion of an actress's performance, giving many reasons why she does "not have any hope for Miss Rowland on the stage." Also included is a letter from Frances Folsom Cleveland to Gilder (1900 Jan. 5), commenting on Grover Cleveland's health, and promising to send photographs of them both. 1 letter from actress Kate Field to Gilder (undated), quotes several favorable reviews of her portrayal of Laura Hawkins and gives Gilder permission to use them. Completing the collection is a sepia print of Field with the accompanying inscription written on Lilian Whiting's business card: "Kate Field at fourteen, from an oil painting. With ever faithful regards to Miss Gilder."

Papers of Joel Chandler Harris, 1881-1908.
The papers contain manuscripts of several songs and poems including "A Negro Love-Song," "Hog-Feeder's Song, " "A Plow-Hands Song, " and "A Plantation Ballad;" a sample title page for "Brer Rabbit and the Tar-Baby;" and an etching of "Uncle Remus" by E.W. Kemble. Letters from Harris are primarily to publishers, editors, and a literary agent and concern the publication, illustration and serialization of his writings. Several letters pertain to the passage of a copyright bill with Harris arguing the necessity of hiring lawyers for lobbying in Congress rather than relying on campaigning by authors. James Whitcomb Riley and the Atlanta riot of 1906 are also mentioned. In addition there are brief letters of thanks and regret and replies to collectors.

Title:
Papers of Hjalmar Hjorth Boyesen [manuscript], 1867-1895.
The collection contains four poems and sonnets by Boyesen, correspondence with admirers, publishers, other authors and friends, and a photograph. The centerpiece of the collection is a group of 13 letters in German by author Friedrich Spielhagen of Berlin, known to Boyesen from his years in Germany. The friends help one another with the translation and publication of their literary output in either America or Germany and discuss a wide variety of subjects and problems, particularly political, social, and health. Other correspondence includes two letters from Louise d'Alq, a French translator, regarding Boyesen's "Gunnar" and the possibility of future translations, and two letters from Archbiship Michael Augustine Corrigan concerning charges of Tammany Hall connections made and retracted by Boyesen. Specific topics in the correspondence include thoughts on evolution, travels to Russia, the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893, Goethe, realism and naturalism in literature particularly in the works of Ibsen and Zola, and Spielhagen's friendship with Carl Schurz. In addition there are 45 letters and fragments in Norwegian.
