Josiah Gilbert Holland was a doctor, an educator, and a popular author, but is best remembered as the first editor of Scribner's. After brief careers in medicine and education, he became editor of the Springfield Republican in his native Massachusetts. In 1870, he became the founding editor and co-owner of Scribner's.
