Title: Records, 1956-2004.

The records consist of a set of the company's magazine, DESIGN SENSE. Although missing four numbers, it is the most complete set extant. Beginning with No. 6, each issue was identified in a continuous number sequence, and the majority had a single theme and title. The title of the serial was changed to SENSE with No. 59. The magazine was circulated to actual and prospective clients and contained short articles on marketing and design trends along with case studies derived from the firm's practice. As a publicity vehicle, the magazine's coverage tends to be broad rather than deep when it comes to describing the firm's actual work. That is, it covers many of Lippincott & Margulies's major clients, but lacks the detail that would have been found in actual design studies and presentations. However, the magazine is copiously illustrated with examples of the firm's designs for logos, signage, packaging, store displays, and the interiors of theme and fast food restaurants. Of particular note is their work with S.C. Johnson & Son (temporarily "branded" by them as Johnson's Wax), including the design of its pavilion at the 1964 New York World's Fair. Apart from the case studies, there are many articles of a general nature charting the changes in the consumer economy over the last half of the twentieth century, including the emergence of a separate youth market, the habits of women shoppers, growing globalization of markets, and the role of corporate image in the volatile world of mergers and divestitures.

This collection of oral history interviews documents the heyday of the tobacco industry and the first decades of its decline in Kentucky. The American Association of Advertising Agencies, founded in 1917, is the primary advertising industry trade organization. The American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA) Records span the years 1918-1998 and include correspondence, annual corporate and stockholder reports for member agencies, meeting minutes and speeches, biographical summaries, a subject file, and videotapes that document selected activities and functions of the organization. The collection has been compiled from a number of accessions received over time, and so does not represent a comprehensive archive of the AAAA. Certain aspects of AAAA activities, however, are well represented, including a set of card files that document the professional careers of AAAA members over a 50-year period, and subject files that focus on Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigations into complaints lodged against advertisers and advertising claims produced in a variety of media, with a particular emphasis on the ways that products were advertised during and in conjunction with children's television programming. Other topics touched on include advertising self-regulation, antitrust issues, advertising laws, and deceptive and ethical practices in marketing and advertising.

Title: Virgil Johnson Collection of Cigarette Packages

As a teenager, Virgil Johnson [b.1918] became interested in the designs and symbols on cigarette packs like "Black Cat" and "White Roll", and he began actively collecting in the 1930s. His interest intensified during the 1940s when he was stationed in North Africa and across the Mediterranean region as a photographer with the U.S. Navy. Mr. Johnson collected cigarette packs for over fifty years, and was a member of the Cigarette Pack Collector's Association. Approximately 6000 cigarette packages, foreign and American, arranged in 24 albums. Manufacturers include names such as those shown below.

The collection consists of approximately 895 insurance plans and maps. Most of the originals were single sheets, approximately 21" x 26" containing a site plan and axonometric drawing with materials denoted by a watercolor wash. The sheets also contain a printed synopsis of the plant and available fire protection systems. The majority of the plants are textile factories, and more than half are located in New England. Of the remainder, most are in the Middle Atlantic States, with decreasing numbers in the Midwest and Southeast. Important non-textile plants include the Boeing Aircraft Company at Seattle, the Glenn L. Martin plant at Baltimore, the rubber factories of Akron, the Buick plants at Jackson and Flint, the General Electric plant at Toledo, the Cleveland Railway Company shops, the Ford Motor Company at Louisville, and the tobacco factories of Virginia and North Carolina.

The Isaiah Bennett Papers contain five small series. The first series consists of biographical documents regarding Isaiah Bennett's life. They include an album regarding Bennett's campaign for Charleston County Council in 1980, with a letter from Rosalynn Carter; an obituary and funeral program, and the finding aid for the collection he donated to the Georgia State University archives pertaining to his involvement with the local 1199 Union. The second series consists of primary and secondary source material on the Charleston Hospital Workers' Strike of 1969 and includes correspondence between Bennett and other leaders of the strike, memorabilia, photographs, and news clippings. The third series contains original items donated to the Avery Research Center for inclusion in the Isaiah Bennett Papers from Georgia State University archives collection on the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). The collection contains clipped pages from popular journals of cigarette advertisments arranged by tobacco company and thereunder by brand and year. Most advertisements can be identified by magazine and date. Although the advertisements are primarily from American companies, there are also ads from British and Continental brands. One can trace advertising campaigns by different companies in different eras. There are advertisments for snuff and other forms of tobacco, examples of cigarette packaging, and photographs of billboards. Finally, the collection includes news clippings and advertisements related to the anti-smoking movement.

Primarily business and personal correspondence (chiefly 1900-1921) of Parrish and of his wife, Rosa Bryan Parrish. Parrish was connected to the American Tobacco Company. The early papers, including turn-of-the-century photo albums, relate to the Murai family and to Murai Brothers, a Tokyo cigarette manufacturing company of which Parrish was the first vice-president. Also included are photographs of travels in China.

The identity of the person who created the album is unknown. This collection contains approximately 465 sports cards and printed ephemera from the late 1800s and early 1900s. All but ten items have been affixed, presumably glued, to pages in an album. Included in the collection are about 425 baseball cards for major and minor league players, approximately half of which are T206 White Borders. The collection also contains three baseball cards for female players that date from around 1885-1886 as well as boxing cards and color pictures of men representing different “race types” from Matthew Fontaine Maury’s . Personal, business, financial and legal papers. The collection contains important materials on the tobacco, textile, electric power, and banking industries, and information about W. Duke, Sons and Company, the American Tobacco Company, Erwin Mills, Mayo Mills, Durham Electric Lighting Company, the Spray Water Power and Land Company, the Dallas Cable Railroad, and the Durham Fertilizer Company. There is information on Trinity College (later Duke University) in correspondence with college officials, faculty and students; and in photographs of the college buildings. There is also material pertaining to B.N. Duke's other beneficiaries, primarily educational institutions. Financial records include the papers of Benjamin's wife, Sarah Pearson Angier Duke and children: Angier Buchanan Duke and Mary Duke Biddle. Legal records include deeds and plats of land for Duke's real estate holdings in Durham. There is also personal material dealing with his children and his homes in North Carolina, Florida, and New York. There is some material on the gubernatorial race between Julian Shakespeare Carr and Daniel Lindsey Russell, and record books for the Alaska Dredging and Power Company and the Solomon River Hydraulic Mining Company. Personal papers of B.N. Duke's secretaries, Richard B. Arrington and Alexander H. Sands, Jr., are included in this collection.

The collection contains the childhood baseball card collection of Richard B. Russell, Jr. There are approximately 1100 tobacco cards dating from the period 1911-1913, and most are in very good condition. These cards were produced by the American Tobacco Company during the height of the so-called dead ball era. The majority of the cards come from the T-206 "White Border" set, the largest tobacco card set of the early 20th century and the one containing some of the most prized cards in the collecting world.
