Autobiography and History of Montgomery (Ala.), 1936-1937, covering the life of Reese and events in Montgomery, Montgomery Co., Ala., from 1866-1937. The first part of this document consists of Reese's autobiography, which contains genealogical information as well. He writes at length about his early life, especially his gambling and his trip to Europe, which was quite extensive, as well as his legal and political career in Montgomery, Ala. The autobiography is detailed, especially how Reese and his father got Mark Hanna to back the younger Reese for the position of U.S. attorney, and why the Reeses bolted to the Populist Party and their subsequently becoming Republicans. The autobiography is particularly rich in materials related to state and national politics, including Warren G. Harding and John H. Bankhead, Sr. and Jr., among many others.

Papers, 1809-1943, that belonged to General Joseph Wheeler consist of genealogical and biographical material, letters and correspondence, financial and business records, legal notes, military reports, speeches, printed material, maps, scrapbooks, and photographs. Additionally, the family subgroups contain a wide variety of papers, including letters, invoices, receipts, account books, legal instruments, real property documents, work contracts, and other material that testify to the family's business and legal activities. The collection documents primarily the public service career of Joseph Wheeler (1836-1906) as a Confederate and, later, as a U.S. general, and, more fully, his almost-two decades as a U.S. Representative from Ala. The bulk of political papers are letters, telegrams, and postcards sent to him in Washington. Unfortunately, Wheeler did not regularly keep records of his responses until the late 1890s, and then only during the months he was on active duty. Within the Political/Post-political series of the Joseph Wheeler subgroup, the letters and correspondence cover such topics as patronage, a variety of U.S. Postal Service issues, military appropriations, claims and pension settlements, the development of Muscle Shoals on the Tennessee River, Alabama politics, the free silver issue, and the Spanish-American and Civil wars, on which he wrote extensively. Other topics include tariff issues, elections, education, and African American soldiers' claims. The Joseph Wheeler papers also include letters and correspondence on personal and family matters as well as financial, business, and legal topics, the latter being generated by the extensive and complicated Wheeler real property lawsuits.

The papers, 1938-1981, contain correspondence, letters, legal records, financial records, lists, photographs, printed matter, awards, greeting cards, certificates, invitations, postcards, appointment books, medical records, newspaper clippings, serials, books, electoral returns, and maps. The most important series in this collection is the one on political campaigns, 1942-1962. Particularly well documented are Folsom's successful campaigns for Governor of Ala. in 1946 and 1954. Extensive correspondence and letter files for both campaigns are present, as are subject files, photographs, campaign materials, lists, and primary returns. Citizens supporting and opposing his campaign wrote to Folsom. Campaign tactics and strategy for particular areas are discussed, as is political patronage and requests for help. Folsom's private papers series, spanning the years 1938-1981, contains interesting material also, including Ala. politics, Folsom's business ventures, Ala. economic development, family matters, the death of his first wife in 1944, and many other subjects. The photographs are very interesting, though not voluminous. Also of interest is the series entitled political correspondence and letters, 1951-1954. In many respects this series is a direct precursor to his 1954 gubernatorial campaign, and the primary subject discussed is Ala. politics.

Papers, 1865-1923 and n.d., consisting of genealogical materials, correspondence, letters, financial records, petitions, clippings, reports, speeches, photographs, printed matter, scrapbooks, and other materials. This collection primarily documents the career of Bankhead (1842-1920) as a U.S. Senator, though his elections to various offices and his personal financial life are both documented quite extensively also, particularly his connections and involvement in Ala. economic developments such as coal mining, real estate, water power and railroads. Within the U.S. Senatorial records the correspondence and letters, general, and the subject files cover a vast array of political topics, with a special emphasis on the U.S. Post Office; river navigation and hydroelectric power; U.S. and Ala. politics; prohibition; agriculture; labor; Good Roads program; tariffs; foreign affairs; and hundreds of other subjects. The photographs are quite extensive, and there are quite a few of him and his children that are in excellent condition and of good quality.
