U.S. Supreme Court justice.
Bradley served as Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1870-1892.
Joseph P. Bradley, Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, was born of English descent in Berne, Albany County, New York on March 14, 1813. In 1839 Bradley was admitted to the bar, and a year later opened up the practice in Newark that would remain there until appointed to the Supreme Court in 1870. Bradley immediately established himself as one of the leaders in the New Jersey bar, and was particularly distinguished as a corporate lawyer. He served as a director and counsel for The New Jersey, Trenton, and Philadelphia Railroad, and also The Camden and Amboy Railroad. From 1857-1863, he served as actuary of the Mutual Benefit Insurance Company of Newark, and from 1865-1869 was president of the New Jersey Mutual Life Insurance Company. After being nominated for the U.S. Supreme Court by President Ulysses Grant, Bradley was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 1870.
