Title: Charles Warren papers

The Papers of Charles Warren reflect Warren's professional work in several legal cases as well as a researcher, writer, and lecturer. Included are materials relating to Warren's work as special master in the cases of New Mexico v. Texas (State boundary dispute), Utah v. United States (re: navigability of Colorado, Green, and San Juan rivers), and Texas v. New Mexico (re: irrigation rights on the Rio Grande); research notes on the history of the Supreme Court, and on other aspects of American legal history; typescripts of short stories by Warren. Most of the correspondence in the collection consists of incoming letters written in response to a book, article, or printed lecture by Warren.

Clement D. Fishburne's memoirs Include material on his student life at Washington College, Lexington, Va., and at the University of Virginia, his teaching at William C. Hagan's Montgomery Academy, Christiansburg, Va., and at Davidson College, N.C., his experiences in the Army of Northern Virginia, and his law practice in Charlottesville, Va. Other subjects include Stonewall Jackson's teaching and his marriages, the Battles of Bull Run and Falling Waters, Philip H. Sheridan's raid on Charlottesville (1865), and the European tour (1828-29) of Zeligman Selwyn Lyons (1805-1852). Department of Justice Alien Property Division documents (largely 1934-1959) contain administrative files including interoffice memoranda, budget, and personnel files; Claims Division and litigation files including correspondence, memoranda and other material concerning individual cases; numbered opinions of the Division's General Counsel; claims decisions and related correspondence; and numerous draft proposals and correspondence regarding amending the Trading with the Enemy Act of 1917. Principal among Jones' projects concerning international judicial assistance was the Commission on International Rules of Judicial Procedure of which he was director in the early 1960's. Personal papers contain correspondence files, ca. 1917-1960, primarily concerning his professional life and correspondents include Homer Cummings, Sherman Minton, Herbert Wechsler and John H. Wigmore, as well as numerous Department of Justice colleagues; drafts of speeches and articles; and newsclippings, ca. 1930-1970.

The Daniel C. Roper Papers, 1860-1958 (bulk 1933-1938), consist chiefly of professional and political correspondence, including telegrams and memoranda, but also include speeches, financial papers, clippings, invitations, legal papers, printed material, and pictures. The collection primarily documents Roper's term as Secretary of Commerce during the first administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In general the papers provide an inside look at this Democratic administration during the early depression years, as well as the relationships among business, government, and politics. In particular, Roper had close ties to people in the business community and was sympathetic to their concerns. In addition, the collection tracks the course of the New Deal in the Department of Commerce and the career of Roper not only as a United States government official in Roosevelt's cabinet but also as a progressive Democrat.
