Caliver, Ambrose, 1894-1962. Ambrose Caliver collection, 1912-1938.
Title:
Ambrose Caliver collection, 1912-1938.
The first three series contain administrative records relating to Fisk University, including communication records of student status with their parents, opportunities for students, institutional support, and transcripts. The Requests series contains records regarding locating Roland Hayes, pioneer African American composer and tenor who attended Fisk from 1905 to 1908, and the Jubilee Singers. Though dismissed after three years, Hayes accepted an invitation from president George A. Gates in 1911 to lead the Jubilee Singers on a tour of Boston, where he subsequently remained and launched his professional solo career. The records contained in the Caliver series contain examples and references from the Great Depression, Harlem Renaissance, New Deal, and the progressive era found throughout the twenty-four subseries. Correspondence, General holds letters that do not fall under any of the subsequent subseries. The Admissions subseries documents Caliver's interaction with accepted and potential students, and scholarship opportunities. The Alumni subseries contains records that document graduates in their professional and civic advances. Contained within the Committees subseries are documents of deliberations, lists, and proceedings ranging from admissions to social and recreation. The Employment Inquiries subseries holds letters of interests for custodian and teaching positions, whereas the Faculty & Staff subseries provides information about the development of the dean's office, and Alaine Locke's contributions to the instructional program at Fisk. Locke, an advocate of the "New Negro" philosophy, was a visiting professor in 1925. There is also information on Z. Alexander Looby, prominent Nashville and post-World War II civil rights attorney, who served as assistant professor of economics from 1926 to 1928; and Horace Mann Bond, educator, sociologist, scholar, and author, who served from 1928 to 1939 in various capacities, including research assistant to Charles S. Johnson, director of the men's dormitory, and chair of the department of education. The Graduate Work subseries and the Honorary Degrees subseries both hold limited correspondence pertaining to students enrolled and honorees. The Institutional Accreditation subseries contains documents of interaction with accrediting agencies of high schools where Fisk students attended, and organizations with interest in colleges and universities, such as the Association of American Universities. The Institutional Requests subseries holds correspondence documenting Caliver's invitation to participate in professional activities at institutions ranging from the Alexander Hamilton Institute to the West Virginia Department of Education. Correspondence between Caliver and Howard University, Meharry Medical College, and Northwestern University Medical School is contained within the Medical Colleges subseries. The Professional Associations subseries consists primarily of correspondence, but also includes announcements, bulletins, and programs of such organizations as the American Association of Adult Education, Association for the Study of Negro Life & History, East Tennessee Association of Teachers in Colored Schools, and the National Education Association. The Publicity Dept. subseries contains records of Fisk's publicity office and of Caliver's application of marketing and promotion tactics. A 1935 promotional announcement of Illinois Congressman Arthur W. Mitchell at the Ryman Auditorium links the collection to the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration, as it is billed under the auspices of the New Deal Progressive League. The majority of the correspondence is with W. E. B. Du Bois, 1888 Fisk alumnus and editor of the Crisis, and Charles S. Johnson as the editor of the National Urban League's Opportunity, before he began his tenure at Fisk in 1928. There are also official records of Fisk's subscriptions to Crisis and Opportunity; documentation of Du Bois public forums and lectures at the Fisk Memorial Chapel in 1928; and correspondence with Countee Cullen, poet, novelist, anthologist, and playwright, and Johnson's assistant editor at the Opportunity. The Registrar's Office subseries holds records that range from attendance notices, course offerings, statistics, and transcript requests to lists of students who were World War I veterans. Limited within the Reports, University Related subseries are descriptive analyses of those from housekeepers to the registrar. The Student Life subseries holds documents pertaining to extra-curricular activities including athletic team lists and schedules, class officers, clubs, fraternities and sororities, and musical ensembles from the glee club to singing sextets. Student Council procedure forms and participation records from the Tennessee Colored State Fair also are contained. The Student Orientation subseries includes correspondence, guidelines, lectures, manuals, and questionnaires and also documents Caliver's consultation with educational professionals and leaders in the field, and his role as an emerging authority on education. There are substantial orders and requests for his Freshmen Orientation: An Outline and Syllabus for a Course in College Problems and Life Adjustments. The Students/Parents and Students/Parents, Prospective subseries both provide evidence of Caliver's work with student intervention and retention, and of parental involvement. Correspondence with parents provides information associated with a professional class and related social institutions. There are letters with C.J. Bass; W. E. A. Forde; J. M. Frazier; and Mary McLeod Bethune. The remaining subseries include Telegrams, including funding appeals to Harvard University, personal transcript concerns, and professional requests; Textbook Orders from Henry Holt & Company, the Ronald Press Company Publishers, and the University Society of Educational Publishers for faculty members; letters (1932, 1934, and 1937) when Caliver served as specialist on Negro education, United States Dept. of Interior, after his tenure at Fisk; a miscellaneous Collection, including bulletins, pamphlets, an undated photograph of Caliver, programs, and non-university-related reports; a second Miscellaneous collection, containing correspondence and application records from the State of Tennessee Dept. of Education; and an unidentified folder of records that do not fit within any of the previous series or subseries.

Schomburg, Arthur Alfonso, 1874-1938. Arthur Alfonso Schomburg collection, 1920-1938, 1985-1993.
Title:
Arthur Alfonso Schomburg collection, 1920-1938, 1985-1993.
The Arthur Alfonso Schomburg Collection consists principally of nine undated typescripts authored by Schomburg primarily concerned with the history of Africans and people of African descent in Latin America and Spain from the 1500 to 1700's as well as pre-Columbian times. One manuscript deals with ancient Egyptian culture; another pertains to the history of Africans in the Americas under Spanish rule; several are annotated. Two of the manuscripts were published in "Opportunity." Additionally, there is another unpublished typescript, with corrections, written by Alain Locke as a foreword entitled "In Memoriam: Arthur Alfonso Schomburg 1874-1938." There is also a brief biography of Schomburg and a list of Schomburg's memberships in various organizations. This collection also includes genealogical information about Schomburg. There are photocopies of a questionnaire (in the the E. Franklin Frazier Papers at Howard University) completed by Schomburg concerning his family background, and copies of Schomburg's baptismal certificate, his Prince Hall Mason membership certificate, and a marriage record for one of Schomburg's paternal ancestors. The quest to understand the genealogy of the German/Puerto Rican side of his family is represented by letters written by Susan Schomburg, a possible distant relative, to staff of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture regarding her research findings. Another letter from Schomburg's daughter, Dolores, discusses the family background. A copy of a letter to Schomburg from Nancy Cunard, two bookplates and an Ellis Island certificate complete the collection.

Jewish Theological Seminary of America. General Files. Records, 1902-1972. 1940-1972 (bulk).
Title:
Records, 1902-1972. 1940-1972 (bulk).
The General Files of the Jewish Theological Seminary, which served as the Seminary's central filing system, consist principally of the correspondence of the president/chancellor (the title changed from president to chancellor in 1951). Some correspondence of vice-chancellors and other. top administrators is also included. Since the bulk of this material dates from 1940-1972, the years Dr. Louis Finkelstein (1895-1992), headed the Seminary, the General Files chiefly document his administration. There is, though, a significant amount of material from the 1930s, some from the 1920s, and a scattering going back to 1902. These earlier files cover, if thinly, the administrations of Solomon Schechter and Cyrus Adler. Records dating from the Seminary's founding in 1886 until its reorganization in 1902 have not been found in these files. Material in the General Files is mainly correspondence, both letters received and carbons of outgoing letters. The files also contain a variety of other types of documents, such as: minutes, reports, press releases, texts of speeches and lectures, clippings, reprints of articles, programs, invitations, guest lists, photographs, and audio tapes. Correspondents include: members of the Seminary's boards of directors and overseers; faculty members, administrators, students, and staff; administrators of institutions and programs affiliated with the Seminary (such as the American Jewish History Center, the "Eternal Light" radio program, the Jewish Museum, the Schocken Institute for Jewish Research, and the University of Judaism); participants in the Conference on Science, Philosophy, and Religion and the Institute for Religious and Social Studies; recipients of honorary degrees; rabbis; clergypeople of other faiths; Dr. Finkelstein's academic colleagues; contributors to his book "The Jews: Their History, Culture, and Religion" (published between 1949 and 1971); representatives of many Jewish communal, religious, cultural, educational, and political organizations; politicians and other public figures; Israeli government officials; administrators of neighboring academic institutions on Morningside Heights, particularly Columbia University; community organizations, particularly Morningside Heights, Inc.; and an occasional member of the public writing to ask a question about Jewish law or custom. These files document Seminary administrative and academic matters, and during Louis Finkelstein's administration they also reflect his role as a prominent American Jew, one who was occasionally called upon to act as a spokesman or representative of American Jews as a whole. Dr. Finkelstein's work as an author and editor, particularly the preparation of his "The Jews..." is documented here. Of particular note are extensive (in some years making up approximately one quarter of the General Files) files documenting the Institute for Religious and Social Studies and the Conference on Science, Philosophy and Religion - programs fostering intergroup relations founded at the Seminary in 1938 and 1940, respectively. Included is correspondence with participants and with people invited to participate. Copies of Conference papers and transcripts of Institute talks are also included. Participants in the Conference and Institute were often prominent people from a wide ran. ge of fields. As a result, there are letters here from W.H. Auden, Mary McLeod Bethune, Franz Boas, Van Wyck Brooks, T.S. Eliot, Nels Ferre, Aldous Huxley, Jacques Lipchitz, Alain Locke, Thomas Mann, Margaret Mead, Reinhold Niebuhr, I.I. Rabi, Bertrand Russell, Bayard Rustin, Delmore Schwartz, Ben Shahn, Harlow Shapley, Paul Tillich, and many others. Also of note is correspondence with Frieda Schiff Warburg, daughter of Jacob Schiff and a Seminary board member. From 1944, when she donated her Fifth Avenue house to the Seminary for use as the Jewish Museum, until her death in 1958, the files contain her correspondence with Louis Finkelstein and other Seminary administrators, notably Jessica Feingold. This correspondence provides a view into the donation of the Warburg house and its transformation into the Jewish Museum.

Henry Allen Moe Papers, 1920-1975
Title:
Henry Allen Moe Papers 1920-1975
An administrator and humanist, Henry Allen Moe (1894-1975) was the first director of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and was a president of the American Philosophical Society from 1959 to 1970. The Moe Papers are a vast and rich resource documenting all phases of Moe's career, but are also a major source of information on twentieth-century philanthropic organizations. As the first Secretary, then Administrator, and finally President of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation (ca. 1925-1963), Moe made contact with the influential and the aspiring in the worlds of banking, finance, the arts, and sciences. This collection is particularly strong in correspondence and information relating to Latin America, much of it generated through Moe's oversight of the Guggenheim's Latin America Fund and by Moe's otherwise keen interest in the region. This material is diverse, ranging from material on agriculture (see Escuela Agricola Panamericana, 15 boxes) and Peruvian archaeology (see Alfred Kroeber's detailed report) to many folders of correspondence and grant reports from artists, writers, and politicians of South and Central America. Moe served as trustee, officer, and committee member of over thirty private foundations, many of which are well represented in the collection by yearly reports and grant applications, among other types of records.
