Charles James Fox was born in London on January 24, 1749. After attending Eton and Oxford, his first political success came with his election to Parliament in 1768. Though he initially supported the government's efforts against the populist machinations of John Wilkes, Fox's political views began to shift after receiving and resigning a number of political appointments, leading him to increasingly ally himself with the Rockingham Whigs. During the early 1770s, Fox opposed the British economic policies that later sparked the American Revolution. In July 1780, he was elected to the first of many parliamentary terms representing Westminster, and from 1782-1784 he served in the ministry of Rockingham and Shelburne. After the failure of an unlikely coalition with Lord North in 1783, Fox's antipathy toward King George III increased dramatically, defining the remainder of his political career. During William Pitt's term as Prime Minister, Fox became an outspoken supporter of Irish Home Rule and a prominent opposition leader. He died on September 13, 1806.
English statesman.
Charles James Fox, English Whig politician. A supporter of the American and French Revolutions, he was also a campaigner against slavery, and an advocate of religious tolerance. Fox's scandalous predelictions for gambling and women led to his dubious distinction of being satirized in political cartoons more than any other figure in late 18th century Britain.
Charles James Fox, a well-known orator and Foreign Secretary in the British government under Rockingham, was an outspoken champion of reform and dominated opposition politics during the second half of the eighteenth century.

Metcalfe, Philip, 1735-1818. Papers concerning the Sir Joshua Reynolds estate, 1785-1901 (inclusive), 1791-1799 (bulk).
Title:
Papers concerning the Sir Joshua Reynolds estate, 1785-1901 (inclusive), 1791-1799 (bulk).
Series I consists mostly of letters received by Metcalfe as executor of the Sir Joshua Reynolds estate. Two letters are addressed to co-executor Edmund Burke. Other notable correspondents include Charles James Fox, Edmond Malone, Reynolds's niece Mary Palmer, and Benjamin West. Most of the letters relate to funeral arrangements and estate finances. Series II includes detailed notes by Metcalfe on the arrangements for Reynolds's funeral, as well as financial accounts with several estate creditors and beneficiaries. A list of Reynolds paintings sold at auction is of particular interest. Preceding one of the estate account books is a subscription list, probably begun by Reynolds in 1785, to raise a monument to Samuel Johnson at St. Paul's Cathedral. Series III, the Metcalfe family papers, are of primarily genealogical interest.

Strahan family. Parliamentary characters, from the Public Ledger, 1779, and the English Chronicle, 1780, & 1781, 1779-1781.
Title:
Parliamentary characters, from the Public Ledger, 1779, and the English Chronicle, 1780, & 1781, 1779-1781.
Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of newspaper clippings of biographies of about 400 members of Parliament. The clippings are arranged in alphabetical order by name, with handwritten annotations of the constituencies represented. The clippings provide summaries of the members' voting record and political alliances, and often provide humorous commentary upon their personalities and foibles. Members of Parliament include Charles James Fox; George Keppel; Augustus Keppel; Lord Frederick North; and Charles Howard, Earl of Surrey. The volume includes two clippings on William Strahan which mock his origins and voting record. The biographies are followed by a shorter section titled Miscellaneous Papers, consisting of about 30 entries, which include newspaper obituaries of notable persons as well as both handwritten and printed humorous poems. Obituaries include those of the Princess Dowager of Wales, written by Strahan; David Garrick; the printers Alexander Kincaid and David Hall; and the bookseller Gavin Hamilton. Several clippings are Strahan's letters to editors of Edinborough newspapers concerning a bill in Parliament on behalf of booksellers. Also included are several clippings related to America and Benjamin Franklin, including critiques of William Robertson, the author of History of America; a letter to Benjamin Franklin by Grenville; an inscription upon a chamber-stove invented by Franklin; and an exchange in the Daily Advertiser between William Strahan and Franklin concerning the British treatment of the American colonies. A handwritten piece is titled Dialogue between Lord Hillsborough and Dr. Franklin, dated 1771. The humorous poems in this section include Irregular ode, by Henry Dundas; and On the death of an eminent surgeon, by an eminent hand. These pieces are followed by 12 clippings related to the death of William Strahan, His Majesty's printer, as well as 3 clippings reporting on the death of Mrs. M. P. Strahan, widow of the late William Strahan.

- Fox, Charles James, 1749-1806. Autograph letter in third person : St. Jame's Place, to Sir William (Johnstone) Pulteney, 1784 Apr. 18.
Collection of engravings, [16--]-1939.
Title:
Collection of engravings, [16--]-1939.
This collection consists of engravings that Pitts Theology Library acquired over a period of several years. Most of the engravings are rather large and have, thus, also been referred to as broadsides. The engravings are nearly all of British origin, with two exceptions: a French cartoon engraving of the body of St. Mary Margaret and "Armě van de Heylige Ligue voor der Jesuiten Monarchy," which is Danish. The last item is accompanied by a draft translation of its inscription into English. The engravings consist mainly of either engraved portraits of prominent men and women or political cartoons. Among the notable persons depicted in the portraits are William Jones of Nayland, William Huntington, Henry Edward Manning, Edward Irving, Popes Pius VI and IX, Sydney Smith, Michael Solomon Alexander, William Wilberforce, Samuel Parr, Frederick Temple, William Dalrymple Maclagan, and Hannah More. The cartoons in the collection are mostly satirical in nature, and their topics include the Catholic Church, Jesuit priests, missionaries, Methodism, and particular individuals (such as W.E. Gladstone). Though the earliest engraving is from the 17th century, the majority of the pieces were created in the late 18th century through the 20th century.

The Henry Clinton papers contain the correspondence, records, and maps of Henry Clinton, who served under Thomas Gage and William Howe between 1775 and 1778, and was commander-in-chief of the British forces in North America from 1778 to 1782. Although the bulk of the papers cover his tenure as commander-in-chief, with particular attention to engagements in New York and New Jersey and the sieges of Charleston and Yorktown, they also document Clinton's efforts to restore his reputation after the war, and to some extent, his personal life. There is also a small number of letters and two manuscripts by other family members: Sophia (Baroness De L'Isle and Dudley), Lord Frederick FitzClarence, Elizabeth (Landgravine of Hesse-Homburg), George FitzClarence (Earl of Munster), and William IV; also, business related letters from William Adam, John Philpot Curran, John Philip Kemble, Henry Siddons, and George Grey (Earl of Warrington). The ephemera consists of two folders containing misc. autograph notes, an envelope, printed material and misc. cover sheets. The Hair box is a hide-covered box originally used by Lord Frederick FitzClarence to store the letters of his parents. Please see the Finding Aid (DJ 6) for an explanation of this box and its use.
