The Duke of Portland served as First Lord of the Treasury as part of a coalition government in Great Britain in 1783 and again in 1807-1809.

David Hartley was a statesman and scientific inventor. In September 1783, he and Benjamin Franklin drew up the peace treaty (the Treaty of Paris) between Great Britain and the United States of America.
