William Johnstone, afterward Sir William Pulteney (1729-1805), Bart, M.P. for Cromartyshire (1768-1774) and for Shrewsbury (1885-1805). He was the author of several political pamphlets, including: Plan of re-union between Great Britain and her colonies (1778) and Thoughts on the present state of affairs with America, and the means of Conciliation (1778). He was the son of Sir James Johnstone, Bart. of Westerhall Co. Dumfries. In 1760 he married Frances Pulteney, the heiress of the estate of Sir William Pulteney, Earl of Bath (d. 1764) and General Harry Pulteney (d. 1767). After her death in 1782, William Johnston Pulteney married Margaret, widow of Andrew Stewart of Castlemilk.

The Pulteney fortune next passed to Henrietta Laura Pultney, only daughter and heir of William and Frances Pulteney. In 1794 she married her cousin, Sir James Murray of Hillhead Co. Midlothian, Bart. (1755-1811) who assumed the additional name of Pulteney. James Murray Pulteney entered the army in 1771 and served in the American colonies in 1775. He then was adjutant general to the troops in Flanders, 1793-1794, lieutenant-general (1797), Secretary-at-War (1807-1809), and M.P. for Weymouth (1790-1811).
