Manchester papers, 1697-1737
Title:
Manchester papers 1697-1737
The papers contain correspondence, copies of treaties, speeches and credentials, orders, memoranda, reports, newsletters and other papers mostly relating to diplomatic, political and military affairs in western Europe during the War of the Spanish Succession. In addition to documenting Manchester's missions to the republic of Venice and the court of France, the papers provide much detail on shifting relations among the northern powers, the break between France and England following the former's recognition of James III, English concern over Jacobite activities on the Continent, and negotiations with the Low Countries and Savoy. Major correspondents writing from England on politics and diplomacy include the Earls of Albemarle, Jersey, Shrewsbury and Sunderland, and secretaries James Vernon, Robert Yard, Joseph Addison and Matthew Prior. Other correspondents include the Duke of Marlborough and J. Chetwynd, writing on military matters, and Sir P. Medows, William Blathwayt, James Cresset, Francis Schonenberg, Abraham Stanyan and Alexander Stanhope, addressing affairs in various countries. Manchester's letters to Blathwayt, located in Series II, describe life at the French court and events leading up to the French violation of the Treaty of Ryswick.

Title:
Letterbook, 1684 Apr 15 to Aug 19.
Manuscript, in mutliple hands, of a collection of copies of 27 business letters by Godolphin to various correspondents, in his capacity as Secretary of State in 1684, concerning such domestic affairs as official appointments; city charters; and infractions against the law. The collection begins with letters to the Peter Mews, Bishop of Winchester, and to John Dolben, Archbishop of York, thanking them for his appointment and referring to the resignation of Sir Leoline Jenkins. The volume also includes other letters to Dolben concerning the appointment of the Recorder of York. These are followed by a letter to the Commanders of the Admiralty regarding a Spanish ship that plundered an English vessel; a letter to the attorney general, Sir Robert Sawyer, regarding an enclosed list of schoolmasters reportedly keeping schools in London without license; a letter to Robert Bertie, Earl of Lindsey, informing him of the King's displeasure at hearing his intentions to challenge John Manners, Duke of Rutland to a duel; and two letters ordering the capture of Captain Samuel Fuller. The rest of the volume was used as a scrapbook in the 19th century, and most of the volume (170 f. in all) contains engravings, both serious and satirical and some hand-colored, cut from contemporary magazines and newspapers, as well as several original drawings in pen, pencil, and watercolor. The collection includes many ship scenes and pastoral scenes, as well as children playing; exotic animals; portraits; statues and vases; architecture; the working class; women; and soldiers. Among the engravings is one after Bartolozzi, identified on the page opposite as the first attempt at engraving by William Chaughton, aged 17, late a ploughboy, and in 1787 a protege of Sir Joseph Banks.
